This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 7 images chosen by readers from my photo archives. Our meme number for this week is 993. Please link in any day this week by digging into your archives and sharing a photo and story on your blog. Plus check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.
Shane chose #993, the Cockscombs seen at the north end of House Rock Valley Road, Utah. Took this photo after hiking in Buckskin Gulch slot canyon which you’ll see below.
Sherry chose #4972, a sweet lioness seen at Kruger National Park, South Africa. Although elephants are my favorite safari animal it’s a real treat to see lions in the wilds as well.
Yogi forgot his number and because he’s such a character I chose 67 for the number of characters in his comment. A rather appropriate pick from the blast zone above Meta Lake at Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in celebration of the eruption 35 years ago on May 18th. Took this when I worked there in 1990s.
Sallie chose #1132, the time when she commented. I occasionally see Copper Hawks come around my Yarnell bird feeders but they don’t usually get a lucky. However, this time, a hawk arrived with a meal. Always a dilemma when feeding the small birds is also feeding the large birds, but it is part of the circle of life.
Jodee chose #813, “Bill’s Birthday.” His present is a shot looking up at a tree wedged in Buckskin Gulch slot canyon. The sandstone rock really isn’t purple but does look like it when in shadow. A great, non-technical, slot canyon to hike.
Diane chose #0077, a place she may recognize at the Mankwe Dam in Pilanesburg Game Reserve in South Africa where she spent much time in the past.
Elaine chose #1133, crashing waves at Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa, where I’ve visited several times and enjoy watching the sea for long hours.
My choice this week, a wonderful and quiet view of Grand Canyon before we opened, which happens today at 8 am. Time to get ready for the crowds and share the canyon with the world. Of course today it’s snowing and there is no immediate view.
Please join in by:
1) Leaving a number between 01 and 9999 in a comment for next week’s Foto Friday Fun.
2) You can also share a #993 photo index number from your photo archives in a post on your blog with a story that goes with the photo. Then add the URL from that post to Mr. Linky below along with your name (Gaelyn, AZ), and link back to Foto Friday Fun 111 in your post so others may read and join in.
3) One or both of the above.
4) Spread the word.
First commenter will chose next week’s photo index number.
Do you have a favorite from this week?
Having internet connection and power outage issues so can only hope I can get this out on Friday.
Thanks for the memories, loved our annual trip to Pilanesburg. The canyon shot is beautiful. We occasionally have a sparrow hawk drop by our feeder and zap one of our small birds in winter. They all have to live. When I get cross is when the neighbour’s cat does the same thing!! 0078 for next week please. Hope all is well at the canyon, Diane
Thought you’d like a peak at Pilanesburg. Right now the canyon isn’t visible from all the fog and snow. Have you down for #0078.
Mary wrote me that it was snowing at the Canyon – also unseasonably cold at her house. Of course, it has snowed all weekend at our house, too. I like the looks of that Buckskin Canyon. My number will be 222.
Yea, we got some snow and it all melted yesterday. May get a little more thies week. Buckskin Gulch is an awesome, and not technical, slot canyon. Have you down for #222.
Nice photos, as always. It’s wonderful that you get that quiet time with the canyon before the crowds arrive. It must be a special time.
#2710 for me this week.
Before opening is very special in deed. Have you down for #2710.
Happy Opening Day at the North Rim. I will be in a Field Institute Class – Draw Grand Canyon – on the South Rim in a couple of weeks. I’m so excited. I’ll also be at the North Rim for my annual trek and stay July 3rd – 10th. I’ll look you up when I arrive.
That should be a fun class. Look forward to seeing you in July.
I vote for the canyon this week – always gorgeous! 2nd place would be branches in the lake. 😉
Sure wish that was today’s canyon view. It’s a total white out with several inches of snow.
I love my lioness!! How proud and strong she looks. Great picture of the Cooper’s Hawk and of course the fantastic canyon. How much did the snow affect opening day? Were they still there in droves?
Still snowing and a lot of disappointed visitors. Still droves. It’s absolutely gorgeous but no canyon views.
No number this week?
I love #1133 – crashing waves! What is it about water? How about #1515 for me? (Date and year)
Water brings such excellent energy. Have you down for #1515.
It is hard to believe that the number I randomly chose brought up a photo that means so much to me (along with your comment … I love the hawk, but the feeder thing is something that has always bothered me) . .. I am gobsmacked by the way randomness works!!) And by your beautiful photos, but I say that every week. (Or oftener.) I can only imagine the joy of seeing a lion in the wild.
I need to choose a number don’t I? Hmm. 9823. That’s totally random. I just moved my finger up there to the top row and typed.
No such thing as coincidence. But I figure it’s a bonus to feed the birds in winter when the food is scarce, and that means the predators too.
The first time I saw lions my breath and heart stopped. I’m still overjoyed by lions, and all animal sights, plus trigger happy.
Have you down for #9823.
BTW, I really liked your boating to the beach, brought back memories for me from childhood boating. Unfortunately, I couldn’t leave a comment.
If you have trouble leaving a comment again will you please let me know what happens when you try? One other person has let me know she has a problem and I need to try to get Typepad to figure it out. I’d really appreciate it if you don’t mind doing this. Thank you. (On the other hand, I won’t feel bad if you don’t have time to mess with it.)
Bill and I both love the slot canyon shot – the colors are amazing 🙂 Sherry’s lioness is so regal, love her too. We just got back from Lake Tahoe, driving Hwy 395 through the Eastern Sierras – so my number this week is 395.
Thanks Jodee. Slot canyons are otherworldly. Then so is safari in South Africa. I highly recommend both. That 395 route has so much to offer, good choice for next week.
Great pics, I can’t believe that I didn’t leave a number and thanks for covering for me.
My number next week is 68!
Thanks Yogi. Guess that’s what happens when you get old. 😉
Great photo of the lioness in the grass but the Grand Canyon pic is still my favorite.
I’m still around but work and life have gotten in the way lately and I haven’t had much chance to read blogs.
Thanks. I know you’ve been busy, good for you.
