This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 8 images chosen by readers from my photo archives. Our meme number for this week is 1688. Please link in any day this week by digging into your archives and sharing a photo and story on your blog. Plus check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.
Sherry chose #1688, a reflection of the sky in the Sterkspruit River where Joan and I hiked in the Drakensburg Mountains back in 2010 not far from our Monks Cowl camp.
Yogi chose #02. I worked at Mesa Verde National Park in 2005 and Step House, where these petroglyphs can be seen, is one of the ruins us Rangers roved in. I was recently told by a Southern Paiute man he hated the words “rock art” because these marks left on rock by ancestors represent stories and shouldn’t be confused with art.
Shane chose #8961, the moon at sunset taken last fall from the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park. I’m looking forward to plenty more of these.
Bibi chose #450, “the number of a recent flight I took.” These two chipmunks took flight off the tire upon hearing the camera shutter click even through the RV window. I am often rewarded with wildlife sightings when motion catches my eye in the ‘yard’ outside my windows at the North Rim.
Diane chose #0076. I remember how excited I was when the solar filter arrived in time for the 2012 annular eclipse. And even more so when the multiple photos I took came out and I put them together in a series.
Sallie chose #8139, “My husband’s birthday.” Here’s an early fall birthday present for her hubby of golden aspen highlighting the ever green firs in the Kaibab National Forest last year.
Jodee chose #522 for her birthday, which is only a couple of weeks away. I gift her Havasu Falls where the Havasupai, or people of the blue-green water, live. It’s a bit of hike about 9 miles down and worth every step.
Elaine chose #2222, dolomite cliffs above the Valley of Desolation in Camdeboo National Park, South Africa. The historic town of Graaff-Reinet lies below in the valley.
My choice this week reveals crepuscular rays slicing across the face of the Vermilion Cliffs in northern Arizona. This was Wednesday’s “Uhhhhhh……ahhhh….” on the drive from the South to the North Rim. Thanks for sharing the memories.

Do you have a favorite from this week?
I just love that last photo!
Thanks. It was amazing sight.
Havasu Falls looks pretty amazing. I’ve seen pictures of it before but never from that angle. Very nice.
#993 for me this week, please.
Havasu is a breathtaking canyon. Have you down for #993.
Well there you go again, every picture a beauty. Love my reflection. I’d sure like to be at the North Rim to see those chipmunks and that great full moon. The Havasu falls are fantastic. Did you hike down and camp at the bottom and then hike out? That’s my vision. Someday…………… Sounds like we should be calling the “rock art”, rock stories. I love to visit them and go out of my way if I get information on where they are. So glad Mesa Verde protects them. I’ll take 4972 for next week.
Thanks Sherry, you always say the nicest things. Yes, another Ranger and I hiked down and back up after 4 days. I’m going to try to get rid of the ‘rock art’ in my vocabulary, I like stories instead. Have you down for #4972.
Yes. Yes I do have a favorite. It’s those darn Chip and Dales getting in trouble again. That pic is really adorable! What a collection of photos you have for this Friday. Nice! Hope you have a fun weekend! Me:)
They are pretty adorable. I have the weekend off and plan to get off the NR and away from the snow. Picking up the truck camper in Kanab. Have fun this weekend.
I love those falls. They remind me of the one at Tsitsikamma.
Just have to make the Tsitsikamma water a little more aqua colored.
I love all your photos this week. The aspens and firs really caught my eye though.
Thanks Yogi. Fall is such a magical time of contrasts. No number this week?
Don’t you just have to shake yourself sometimes when you think about the beauty you see on just a drive-by? That last picture is so lovely. Bill thanks you for the golden aspens … we both love them and so my number was a lucky one.
I didn’t realize you’d worked at Mesa Verde — we went there for the first time just a couple of years ago — an amazing park. And I know what you mean by ‘roamed there’…. I loved it that when we were hiking, climbing or just sitting a knowledgeable ranger would often happen by to answer our questions, even when we weren’t on an organized tour.
Loved everything and I will choose 1132. (The time, yawn).
Thank you Sallie. I always look forward to your comments.
When out in nature I am in constant awe of my surroundings. And in Mesa Verde, 2005, I felt honored to feel the presence of happy people from the past.
Have you down for #1132. Good night. Or maybe morning when you see this. 😀
LOVE my falls! The very first picture I ever saved in my “Let’s Go There” picture frame was of Havasu Falls, and it continues to be my “goal hike”. I’m wondering if rock story or story wall is more accurate, or if just the lack of art in the description is most important. Makes sense to me either way 🙂
Bill’s birthday is 813, let’s see what his “spirit photo” is :-)))))
Havasu is definitely a must see. Think WAY ahead for reservations or permit. The tribe is not very punctual about reply.
I think maybe ‘story’ alone is adequate when describing petroglyphs or pictographs.
Have you down for #813.
Love all these photos especially the first one of the reflection and mine of the moon. 0077 for next week please. Diane.
Thanks Diane. Hope you’re having fun in Amsterdam. Have you down for #0077.
All lovely photos! I really like the one of the Vermillion Cliffs. I’ll take 1133 for next week.
Thanks Elaine. That shot was a bonus for me. Have you down for #1133.
