The walls inside Desert View Watchtower provide a pallet for murals by Fred Kabotie. The 70 foot high stone tower designed by American architect Mary Colter was constructed in 1932 replicating a prehistoric Indian tower. This National Historic Landmark is located on the East Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
I like these figures and overall scene very much. I’m partial to naive art, of which there’s quite a bit here in Serbia, and this reminds me a bit of it.
I too appreciate Native art. Plan to see some rock art in South Africa.
Thank you for showing us this beautiful mural Gaelyn. Wonderful native art indeed.
You’re welcome.
I am having SO much trouble with my internet. I’ve tried to post this 3 X now to say that The Watchtower is one of my favorite places at the South Rim. I love Mary Coulter’s work and her choice of art and artist for the Watchtower. Thank you for taking me back there.
I too admire Coulter’s work plus think it is marvelous She was given a chance in those times.
I have fond memories of this tower. Mary and I visited a few years ago on our way to her house from Moab. It was early spring and few people were there.
The tower is a wonderful piece of history.
I love stuff like that. I would like to see when I get back to the canyon.
I’m sure it will still be there ‘when’ you visit.
Love it!!!!!

I love American Indian history and art.
Have you ever done a full on post about this? Mmmm, going to have to go and look back in your blog. Interesting artwork.
I looked. And no I haven’t posted about the Watchtower before. Guess that’s because I usually look at it across canyon from the North Rim and it’s on the South Rim.
