Diagonal slash is the Yarnell Hill Road and I live at the top
I figured being only 2 1/2 hours from home I’d buzz back to Yarnell to pick up some things, be there a few days and return to the desert. Not to be.
Welcome home to more repairs. This time on my 5th-wheel home. I was dreaming of a hot shower and instead discovered the kitchen faucet broken. Although I’d drained the water lines, turned off the water to the RV, and put anti-freeze in the drains there must have been just enough water in the line to freeze and blow things apart.
Because it was Sunday I had to wait until the next day to buy yet another new faucet and put it in all by myself. But only because I could see it. Thank goodness there’s a cupboard door on the backside of the sink.
I really liked the old faucet better, but what’s a girl to do.
Moved the groceries out of the camper only to discover the refrigerator/freezer in the 5th-wheel wasn’t cold. So refrigerated groceries went back to the camper. It’s like having a big house to walk further for the food which wouldn’t be so bad if it hadn’t been raining for several days.
After talking to several people about the fridge, compressor still running but no cold, and searching online about repairs I decided it was cheaper to replace the unit as the repairs would probably cost the same if not more. Now you have to remember this is not a RV propane/electric refrigerator, it’s a home model. Price for the RV unit is about $1600 compared to $430, which is why the previous owners replaced it with a home model as it sat in one place all the time. The old Magic Chef is 5 1/2 years old and out of warranty. It’s a very specific, and small opening so the choices for replacement are limited. Reviews were not great for the Magic Chef, or for Sears who carries Whirlpool and Kenmore. Home Depot sells a Frigidaire that will fit plus they deliver, install and take the old one away for no extra charge. But it won’t be here until Friday, Feb 2. So I wait.
It’s not really terribly cold in Yarnell but has been raining a lot so I’ve only been motivated to go out as far as the camper/refrigerator. Heck I thought about just staying in the camper in the driveway. But I do love the space my 5th-wheel offers even though the truck camper proved to be quite comfortable staying in over a month. That’s good, because after that refrigerator is delivered and known to be working, I’m hitting the road again.
In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the sunsets over the Weaver Mountains through my Imax windows.
You can do without these problems. I hope it does not get too cold before you leave again. Keep well. Diane.
Thank goodness I’m looking at a warming trend this week.
Doesn’t sound like a relaxing visit “home”. Hope when you return next time everything will be working!
Me too. Heck I’m still working out issues with the truck camper. But I’m not going to let that keep me “home”.
You have a great attitude about coming home to a ton of “stuff” when you only thought you were stopping by to pick up a few things. Leaving any home in freezing weather is a real crap shoot so to speak. Glad yours wasn’t any worse than it was. Bad luck that the fridge went out at the same time unless the weather had something to do with that too. But good luck that you seem to have it all in hand and will be on your way again soon.
I certainly wasn’t a ‘happy camper’ but know the realities of home repairs. Weather is looking good for next week when I hope to be on the road again.
You know, you should start a side business of RV repair…you have had enough practice! More importantly…did you get a hot shower?
No thanks. I used to do most of my own repairs but now I’d rather someone else did it. I did get my hot shower, on Monday. 🙂
We have been going through the same ” home maintenance” routine! Our slide is stuck again, the 3rd time in 5 years! We are considering trading in The MotherShip! We just don’t trust this Schwintek.slide system anymore! Evergreen has been good about taking care of us, but this is a major manufacturing flaw by the slide company!
Good luck with your new fridge and you did a damn good job installing you faucet m
I’ve heard of slide problems from others but don’t know which manufacturer. I don’t blame you for wanting to trade it in. Thanks. I was pretty proud of myself for that faucet job.
I would never have a slide out by any manufacturer. Every blog that I have read where the slide out owner had them for any length of time had some problem. I think they may be good for about a year, then will stick open at the worst possible time.
I put off getting a unit with slides for many years because of the thought of this nightmare, especially solo boondocking. But, knock on wood, haven’t had problems other than replacing seals. Anytime a slide sticks would the worst possible time. I sure do like the extra space the slides offer.
For sure you can do without all the repairs. You are a great handywoman!! 🙂
Not really such a great ‘handywoman’ anymore. But this job was easy.
I guess you are a two home person now. All that maintenance and yet you take things in stride. You always do. I’m still mad at the people who took your stuff in South Africa. I guess it is time for me to move on.
Yes, a 2 RV home solo family, and homes always need repairs. Used to be I’d go bonkers over stuff like this but eventually I figured out that was a waste of energy. Yes, Yogi, it’s time for you to move on.
Well, at least you found out now and got needed repairs taken care of and still have time to get back out there. Silver linings?! 😉
Definitely silver linings.
When it rains it pours so glad you are getting it all fixed again. But the wanderlust is strong in you so I can’t wait for “us” to hit the road again
Hopefully next week I’ll be off again.
We’re waiting for Les our handyman to come over to install a kitchen & bathroom faucet ….guess we could have had you do it on your way through 🙂 🙂
I only do faucets I can see underneath. Hope you’re problems are solved.
Glad to see you’re ‘home’ a bit, but sorry for your woes. Before I left for the US, I had a series of home malfunctions. One after another. Fridge, dishwasher, computer….
So, is there a travel gremlin?
Love those IMAX windows. Oh sorry ’bout all the repairs, it always seems like it’s one thing after another with RVs…. but glad you have an adjunct refrigerator … we lived for a couple of weeks with an ice ches tsitting on the counter when ours went out one time. Not fun. They’re hard to find and hard to find a person to repair them.
I’ve lived out of ice chests before too and am grateful for the camper fridge being near enough.
