I’ve been talking road trip for months. First idea was all over the Pacific Northwest which only partly happened. Also threw out southeast Arizona due to higher elevations meaning cool temperatures. And you know I Don’t Do Cold! So many choices and national park options: Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree National Park, Anza Borego, Salton Sea…
Had a few important things to tie up before I leave, mostly insurance shit. I don’t want to rant about AHC (Affordable Health Care) because maybe that can save me from an over $100 increase to my current AZBCBS. And BS it is.
But I don’t want to sit around all winter. I am going to hit the road. I just hesitate to write a plan because shit happens and plans change. And now Christmas is coming and I don’t like to travel over the holidays.
So I’ll just keep packing the camper and one of these days I am going to hit the road.
Where to? Surprise!
Surprise sounds great to me. Isn’t that in Arizona? Or is it New Mexico? 😉
There is a Surprise, AZ retirement community. But not for me. I was thinking more of watching the weather, flipping a coin, and Surprise! I don’t know where I’m headed or when.
Ah! Can’t wait to see where you go. Every one of those places on your target are on my to-go list, too! Planning on camping in a couple of them in Feb/early March! Maybe I;ll see you there! 🙂
All worthy places. Ya’ never know, we may cross trails in one of them.
I’m thinking WARM also – – I’m off to kitchen duty in a few – so, talk later – have a great day

Hi Gaelyn,
Have a good recommendation for you. The Agua Caliente County Park. It is in S E San Diego county. Lovely park, full hookups, great views, very clean and hot mineral pools. Not very expensive as it is a county (San Diego) park. Very close to Anza Borrego.
I have hosted several rallies there and everyone seems to like it. Rosemary
Thanks for the recommendation Rosemary. I don’t usually do RV parks but the hot water does sound inviting. I’ll check it out.
If you want to stay warm I guess you’d better stay SW. Or maybe Brazil or not. I know nothing!!!

For health reasons I Need to stay warm. Maybe Mexico?
I want you to go to Kofa because I’ve never heard of it before. But that’s a selfish reason cuz I can look it up. So go wherever you want! I love Joshua Tree NP, but it isn’t super warm. You could go on down to the Salton Sea area from there though, if it got too cool. Whatever you choose, just go! What’s so bad about travel over the Holidays?
The Kofa, if you haven’t already looked it up, is south of Quartzsite. And if nothing else I should be there mid-January when I meet up with some friends near there. I know I seem to be dragging my feet but holidays are a crowded time to travel. Who knows. I’ll finally get a bug up my butt, and just GO.
It’s a bit of a drive from where you are now, but I’d advocate for Everglades and Big Cypress! We absolutely love it here, and have had a blast exploring in the warm sunshine via kayak. I like winter… on television 😉
Wherever you go, have fun!

You’re right, FL is a little too far away thus out of the budget.
Ah, wanderlust….now that I am back on my feet again, I am anxious to hit the road. Or jet stream, since I’ll be flying over your way (not that close, alas) on January 14th, hoping to escape the winter cold here. I hate winters in the city. Thankfully, Seattle won’t be so bad…I hope.
And then, if all goes well, India in early April. Perhaps warmer, though I’ll be at a high altitude. I ramble. I would love to do a real road trip, though….
Seattle can be quite nice in winter. India even better.
I always think – even when I’m at my most impatient – that it will happen when it is supposed to. You’ll know it when the time is right. 😉
Good counsel. I am restless, yet also in conflict.
I like the Mexico idea. With all the blogs I follow the only other place that seems warmer than anywhere in the SW is Gulf Shores, Alabama. Still, I like your Mexico idea compared to your other options.
I actually haven’t been to Mexico for years. But as a solo female RVer I’m hesitant to cross the border.
South Texas is warmer than either Florida or Arizona right now but all that fluctuates frequently
Has been a couple years since I was in south Texas.
Joshua Tree National Park is cold in December and January. I was there for about a week in mid-December 2009 and got snow, cold and winds. Your other choices would be better if your trying to avoid the cold.
Thanks for that. I’m leaning towards Anza-Borrego at 280 feet in elevation.
Let me know if you come to California. All the places you mention are within striking distance of San Diego. Anza-Borrego can also get a flurry of snow if the storms are right but it disappears quickly. Of course there is a bed available at our house as well. Stay safe, and drive safely.
I’m leaning towards Anza-Borrego at low elevation. Will let you know. Would love to see you.
Well, I can’t wait to see where you go. I’m one of those that would go for warm.
I’ve been fascinated by tiny homes and watching HGTV’s new tiny houses shows but you take tiny to a new level.
This new camper seems big to me. I started out traveling and living in a Vega.
I’m also thinking warm.
Well we’re leaning towards Anza Borrego, actually hoping to arrive possibly tomorrow, if all goes well. KOFA is beautiful. Would highly recommend!
I too am leaning towards Anza Borrego maybe by Friday or Saturday. I’ll be in the KOFA next month.
