Monsoon season brings the most amazing skies to the Southwest.
Sometimes rain falls and other times it just looks like the sky is falling at Grand Canyon.
When the rain doesn’t hit the ground it’s called virga.
Check out other awesome skies from around the world or share your own at SkyWatch Friday.
Gaelyn, Your sweeping sky shots over the canyon are amazing. What a view you have at your workplace! It’s been raining here in Breckenridge for several days. I’m getting mildewed.
Thanks Barb. Sorry to hear about the mildew. Don’t suppose you need the rain as badly as here.
What a nice way to spend the work day. Night and day our worlds!
I LOVE monsoon! Not completely different Chris.
These photos are spectacular. I love the SW in August for the thunderstorms. But I really like the SW any time. 🙂
Thanks Becky. I Absolutely LOVE monsoon. Very special to embrace rain in the desert.
Great title, fabulous pictures. We saw some sky falling onto the South Dakota Prairie today ahead of us as we drove toward Nebraska.
Thanks Sherry. With such a Big view over prairies skyfall must have been superb. You heading east already?
Stunning photos and capture of the power of the rain front.
Thanks. I can hear another storm approaching.
Spectacular Photographs. Wow is all else I have to say.
Thanks Yogi. Monsoon definitely brings WOW moments.
wow! What a beautiful sight to capture ~ Great shots for SWF ~ thanks,
artmusedog and carol (A Creative Harbor)
Thanks. Monsoon skies change so rapidly.
Wow! Talk about being in the right place at the right time !! Wonderful shots Gaelyn
Thanks. Storms come in almost every day during monsoon.
We were coming up next week but we are on high great-nephew alert!!…My niece (light of my life) is having her first and I just can’t miss it. She is not due until 8-21 but they are thinking any day now….We were in Flagstaff last week and had some pretty good storms then on really nice one in Congress when we got home….
First babies are very important. Hope you can make it up later. The storms are good.
Heaven descending!
We get a bit of your monsoons in the S. CA deserts, and yes, some beautiful skies recently!!
Always a privilege to receive rain in the southern desert.
No monsoons in this part of the country, but I have seen the rain clouds do this in east Tennessee before. It’s pretty amazing to see a sheet of rain falling from the top of a mountain or if you’re driving a wall of rain in the distance ~ very cool stuff. If I’m not already following you, I will be soon. It’s nice to meet you on SWF!
In Colorado they call it “intermittent” rain and I’ve driven through those walls of thundering water. Thanks for coming by.
Simply spectacular! We’ve got to return. Had one brief day visit years ago.
A day is not enough. You really need to come back.
The photos with the rain coming down and the sun hitting the rocks in the front are really spectacular.
Thanks. It’s a beautiful scene to behold.
Hi Gaelyn, I just signed up for a job with Forever Resorts to work at the North Rim from August 15-Oct 15. I sent a friend request on Facebook.
Teri
Such a beautiful pic which explains everything + the beauty of it.
Amazing capture of the stormy skies. It must be cool to see it in person over the Grand Canyon!
Happy Skywatching and have a great weekend!
Awesome photos! Ya gotta love and respect Mother Nature!
Love the rain shots—-SPECTACULAR!!

What fabulous and totally unexpected photos–it truly looks like the sky is falling into the canyon. I always wondered what it would be like to be a park ranger. I’ve not had the opportunity to visit any national parks, but I do like the state parks. To be a park junkie would suit me just fine!
It frequently looks like this at the canyon during monsoon. I have the best job in the world. State parks are good but add National Parks to your list.
Wow – how dramatically gorgeous!
Lovely views of such a wonderful treasure.
WOW! That looked like it was a good storm?
When we get them, they are excellent storms.
I love the sight of rain over the canyon as much as blue sky sunny days. These monsoon shots are stunning.
The skies have been putting on quite a show.
Virga is just a tease! Falling sky is good when it brings needed moisture. They can even use it in Oregon this summer.
I love that! “Virga is just a tease!” I’m stealing that. We got a couple days of sweet rain. Posting tomorrow about the recent monsoon skies at the canyon. Keep on having fun in AK. I’m jealous.
