The world’s largest antelopes with males weighing in from 1300-1500 pounds. Saw these two male elands at Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. Must be young bachelors as dominant males travel alone and females gather in large groups.

Eland are really magnificent animals. They may not have stunning horns like a kudu, but they have an imposing presence.
Love their stance.
They are huge! What is wrong with that one on the right’s back leg? it looks like it has a tumor on it.
Yes, they are huge and it probably is a tumor. I saw a few other species with tumors as well.
Whoa! they are big guys. That one is really looking at you. Great! MB
They’re almost intimidating looking especially compared to the pronghorns we are used to seeing when we travel. A frequent crossword puzzle answer … so I knew what they were, but it is fun to actually see.
I’d compare the elands to elk or moose size.
It is so nice to have these beautiful flash-backs of our trip to South Africa…thanks!
Time to go back?
These are really fat and would make quite a bit of biltong. 😀
Hmmm, didn’t try the eland biltong.
Wow! Fabulous picture of an animal I’ve never even heard of. That’s sad. There is so much I don’t know and haven’t seen. But thanks to you I have seen these. They look huge. I had a 1200 pound appaloosa horse and thought he was big.
Always fun to learn something new isn’t it? I learned so much about the wildlife in SA from Joan.
