This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 7 images chosen by readers from my photo archives. I love sharing these memories as photos are drawn up from my past.
Yogi chose #2014, “because that is the here and now.” And although this photo of the Drakensburg Mountains was taken in 2010 it was my here and now at the time. This amazing hike took me into the serenity of these luscious peaks and is part of what has captured my heart in South Africa.
Diane chose #1947 for husband Nigel’s date of birth. Living in France she and Nigel may never make it to the Grand Canyon in reality so I like sharing it virtually. This is a morning shot taken from the Grand Lodge in August, monsoon season.
Being that Sherry ‘forgot’ to leave a number I’m choosing #65 for her, the number of characters in her comment. And with that you all get a shot of this character, me, in my arts and craft store in Tonasket, Washington. I used to paint the window for holidays and this was taken around St Patricks Day 1984. Can you believe all that hair?
Bibi chose #5660, “which is the distance in miles from Belgrade to my first destination, Seattle!” And another of her destinations is here at the North Rim. Yet I don’t think she’ll be including these caves found along the Wild Coast of South Africa on this journey. Joan and I were guided down the beach by Dezela to the fascinating Mzamba fossil site.
Elaine chose #18, “as we’ve went over the 18 hour mark between sunrise and sunset.” That’s a big deal when you live in Alaska so I don’t know how happy she’ll be with this snow covered Chateau at Oregon Caves National Monument. After working a summer season leading cave tours I stayed for part of the winter as a volunteer in 2003/04.
MaryBeth also chose #2014 because it’s “this year and the year Paul and Michelle got married.” Weddings always make me think about flowers so here we have the brilliant blooms of Indian Paintbrush taken along the Arizona trail on the North Rim.
Jonker chose # 8762, randomly. And here is a random shot of a herd of springbok, a medium-sized antelope, seen at Kgalagadi National Park South Africa.
My choice this week from an awesome sighting of 7 California Condors seen at Navajo Bridge in Marble Canyon Arizona. Stopped here with staff on our way to training on the South Rim. #54 had just landed on an obviously well used rock actually chasing off a younger Condor to another perch.
Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun where readers choose a number from my archives and I share the corresponding photo and a story. To join in the fun for
next week leave a number between 01 and 9995 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.
Do you have a favorite from this week?
I have so many photos to share from this recent journey in South Africa. So as I label them am posting every 100th image on the Geogypsy Facebook page where you can follow along.
Capturing the present for future memories of the past
Amazing pics again. The morning shot of the canyon is my favorite.
My number for next week is 5999. I just took your max number and moved the five to the back of the line.
Thanks. I figured everybody is ready for canyon pics.
Have you down for #5999. You have an interesting mind.
As always I really like all your pictures. I think the Grand Canyon is my pick of these bunch above.
For next week I will randomly go for 7456.
You’ve tempted me now to pick out my pictures from 1984, I know I had a lot more hair then too.
Thanks. Have you down for #7456.
Oh you are so sweet to pick such a great number for me. I love seeing you in your shop. This week was a real variety of pictures. I liked that and all of them. You did such a good job with 65 that I think I’ll take 75 for next week.
Glad you liked my hippie days. Have you down for #75.
Oh wow Gaelyn, I really feel like I am at the canyon looking at that photo, it is amazing. I like all your photos but think mine is the best 🙂 Have a great weekend. Diane. Oops nearly forgot 1915 my Mum’s year of birth.
I like taking you to the canyon. Have you down for #1915.
I do like the snowy scene at Oregon Caves, although I imagine that there aren’t many days there when such a photo would be possible.
I am drawn to the photo of the Grand Canyon and the one of the Drakensburg Mountains. The Mountain photo bears a resemblance to the views we saw of the Alaska Range yesterday from Denali National Park. Of course, those views included snow! We took advantage of the opportunity to drive the Park road to Mile 30 before it closes to auto traffic on May 20th. After that it’s buses only. Although most of the snow is gone in the park there were still patches of snow and the vegetation was just beginning to show signs of green. Denali was established as a National Park in 1917, interestingly two years before the Grand Canyon, so I’ll pick 1917 as my number this week.
Now I am jealous. Have you down for #1917.
I just love those green felt-looking peaks! Also love your long hair in 1984. My new number is 139 – my hubby’s and my ages added. Gosh, we’re OLD!
I want to spend more time in the Drakensberg in their summer as sometimes they see snow.
You’re not old and could possibly both make it to your chosen #139, or more.
I swear every picture I said ‘this one is my favorite’…. then, ‘no, this one”…. Loved the colorful canyon, but also I’ve never seen a picture on a blog of a condor and so that is wonderful. So glad the species survived. No witty reason for a number, but my clock says 610 at this moment so I’ll choose that.
Thanks Sallie. I don’t see condors often and get so excited the photos are usually blurry. #610 it is.
Oh my! Who IS that lady in the fossil walk picture? LOL!! Love the Drakensberg pic. We definitely need to do more hiking up there next time.
I could certainly spend more time in the Drakensberg.
Greeting from Seattle and thanks for the caves. They’d be fun. Love the green hills in the first shot, and even the snow one, though don’t want to see the white stuff up close and personal now.
Next week I’ll have #3910, which was the street address of my grandmother’s house, where I spent many a happy summer.
The snow is gone here so think you’ll be OK. Have you down for #3910.
As usual excellent shots. I love the soft green on the hills in your first shot and the Indian Paintbrush is gorgeous. When you mention Tonasket I think of Republic. Republic is one of my favorite places and I spent a lot of time there in the 60s and 70s. Haven’t been back there for about 12 years though.
My pic for Friday will be 8 the age of my dog Bingo. MB
Used to make a run up to Republic just for fun when living in Tonasket. Have you down for #8, woof woof.
I passed the Wild Coast Sun the other way on my way back from Durban and will probably go back there for a meeting some time soon. I really want to go and see the Fossil site.
For next week can I have something straightforward like a 21?
Make arrangements for Benny to guide you to the fossil site, he usually does that in the morning.
Have you down for #21.
