Spotted hyena, also known as the ‘laughing hyena’ seem to get a bad rap like most scavengers. However I think they are adorable, especially the young cubs. And who could resist a pair of spotted hyenas suckling. In fact they may suckle up to 18 months because the adults do not bring food back to regurgitate and often have to scavenge far away from the den. Seen at Kruger National Park South Africa.
Prints available of these cuties and many other South African safari images.
Oh you know how I love these creatures, Gaelyn. What an endearing post. I didn’t know they suckle for 18 months and the reason for it. Thanks for enlightening a South African! Hope you’re having a great tour. (((Hugs))) Jo
Funny thing is another pair of pups were also suckling.
I haven’t seen hyena in the wild yet. What an amazing sighting!!!!!
That’s hard to believe as we also saw hyena in Addo.
Surprising that they would lay right out in the road instead of a more secure place but it sure makes them easier to see.
A lot of animals are found in the road where its nice and open to see possible predators coming.
Gaelyn, You’ve caught some awesome shots, but surely this will be one of your favorites!
I really do like the hyenas.
It surprises me that she’s lying on the road, but I guess it’s warm and feels good!
It is very common to find animals on the road where they can see potential trouble coming.
I love their little ears. What an endearing picture. I’ll bet the road is warm too. What a great place.
I think they are absolutely adorable.
They don’t seem to care… a nice way to get used to their sight.
Lovely photo of mama and babies!
