It’s not uncommon while on a game drive to see elephants on the road. It’s just any easy place to walk while looking for something to eat. But you do have to be careful to stay out of their way and watch for signs of aggression. Usually they are just lumbering along like this one. But stay away if you see a lot of ear spreading and flapping, head tossing, tusks lifted, or a male in musth during a time of heightened sexual activity when a dark secretion is seen from the temporal ducts.
I think he was waiting for you to drop your camera. He sure seemed to be ear flapping to me.
What an adventure you are having!!
Glad I didn’t drop the camera. Ear flapping is vigorous and distinct not like this. It is an adventure. And today I saw over 100 elephants all at once. One even sniffed the tailgate.
Nice video. It reminds me of my trip to Kruger. There was a whole herd of elephants including baby elephants wanting to cross the road right in front of us. The adults were very protective and wary of us.
We were in a queue of traffic waiting for them to cross yet somehow the elephants wanted to cross specifically where the front car was.
In the end we all had to gradually reverse back a bit and wait. Only then did the nervous elephants cross.
Today at Addo Elephant NP was even more exciting when we were surrounded by elephants. I could feel their rumbles.
This would definitely make me very, very nervous….
And to lighten up, here’s an elephant joke for you: (very dumb, of course)
Q: What does Tarzan say when he sees a herd of elephants in the distance?
A: “Look, a herd of elephants in the distance”
Groan. 😉 You would have been really nervous today when we were surrounded by elephants. Video coming soon.
Oh my goodness he’s HUGE and those tusks. Could he just up and toss your car if he felt like it? Magnificient. Thanks so much for the video. It was wonderful to look at……all 8 times I did. LOL
That one was Huge. Elephants are not typically aggressive unless provoked but they have been known to flip cars. Wait til you see video from today in Addo Elephant NP when we were surrounded by elephants. I could feel them rumble.
Had no idea. Elephant porn?:)
Now that’s my kind of stalker! I’d be very tempted to go out and hug him although that may not be such a good idea. I just feel that if one sat in the grass at peace and at one with the land, he would accept one as part of the whole.
What wonderful experiences you are having. With being so close to the animals, I do not wonder at all at you wanting to go back there again and again. Enjoy the magic Gaelyn and more power to you!
I feel so at peace around the elephants and also have a desire to touch them, even though I know better. Just feeling them rumble fills me with joy.
Snap! Except that I would wish the elephant to come and initiate the exchange and check me out . . . dream on.
I wonder what he was thinking as he followed us? 😀
I smell bananas. 😉 Oops, wrong elephant.
Oh my gosh. This is the most wonderful adventure. Did somebody hand you that information about what to watch out for or did you just know (well you probably did because of your friend and the fact that you’ve been there before, but what about the first time?) They are such beautiful animals.
It is a wonderful adventure. I’ve learned almost enough from my South African friend to become a wildlife guide. Didn’t know nothing the first visit. Love the Elephants!
Some people take huge chances with elephants and often when something then happens the elephant gets blamed. Like the idiots who had their car flipped in Kruger by an elephant. They were fully at fault but the poor elephant got shot.
I agree about the idiocy. This elephant didn’t pose any threat to us and was just walking the road until some interesting food caught it’s eye.
The other day at Hapoor an elephant walked past a car with plenty of distance and they backed up with screaming tires while the woman inside screamed also. Now that could cause a problem.
It’s not the elephants fault, it’s humans.
