Chapman’s Peak Drive twists along the Atlantic coast between Noordhoek and Hout Bay with sheer drops to the sea below and towering mountains rising above. Thank goodness for the many pull offs to enjoy the view. First opened in 1922 then closed in the 90s after a rockfall caused death. Reopened in 2005 with some added protection for motorists and bicyclists. I love these curvy roads even driving on the left. Would you ride a bicycle here?
I will definitely ride a bicycle here. The scenery is amazing.
That it is.
That looks pretty danged scary to me bicycle, car or whatever.
Was fun in the car.
WOW what if two cars were coming, one from each direction?? I sure wouldn’t ride a bicycle there. Sounds beautiful though.
Drivers are pretty good about moving over just a little bit to make it work.
Wowsa! thats like… an adrenalin rush just looking front and back for incoming cars from both directions – while biking!
Lol I’d give it a go… but I’d probably get such
a high haha its almost like the roads here in
Costa Rica – but this looks pretty sweet to bike on!
You have great pictures btw… Love them!!
Pura Vida
I love to drive curvy roads but I’m just a bicycle person. Yet I think it would be a real high.
Thanks for stopping by.
Chapmans Peak is very popular with cyclists and now it’s safe too. Believe it or not, we’ve never been up that pass! One day perhaps Grant and I will motorcycle up there and I’ll post about it! Thanks for the post. Hugs Jo
It would make an awesome motorcycle ride. Of course it’s closed right now due to a landslide.
Chapmans Peak truly is one of the most scenic drives in the world and it was great that they could do all the alterations to keep it opened. Great photo.
FYI, they had flash floods in Cape Town over the weekend with some major mud slides on Chapmans Peak causing the road to be closed.
It is an engineering feat and I’m not surprised is closed when there is flooding.
The picture reminded me of the snow sheds along the road through Canada Glacier Park. For non bicyclist it may look scary but the small shoulder to the left of the yellow line is enough for a bicyclist to ride on IF the cars will stay off the yellow line.
I’ve seen snow sheds like this somewhere. The shoulders are usually plenty wide enough for passing.
