This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 8 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives. I so enjoy dipping into memories from over six years ago to less than six months ago.
Arija picked her sister’s birthday #5534 and wrote, “she was one of those rare people walking this earth who not only helped everyone around her, but also thought well of all she met.” I’ll bet she would have also liked this little beggar Honey Badger that I saw at Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Just look at those claws that are made for digging. It was reaching for the guide’s heavily booted foot.
Diane wrote, “My friend is getting his 910 Porsche ready for a race next month so that looks like it will have to be my new number.” I wouldn’t mind watching a car race from this lovely swing yet the view might be tough as it’s sitting on the side of the Weaver Mountains in Yarnell, Arizona. And the nearest house can be seen in the distance so I don’t know who uses it other than me when I take a walk outside my back door.
Susie’s “pic for next Friday is 2007 – the year I moved to Saudi Arabia.” Being it’s pretty dry where she lives I’m not sure how many waterfalls she gets to see. This photo was taken at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa. This is the park’s natural swimming pool but I’d have needed a warmer day to take a dip in these chilly mountain feed waters.
Jo’s request this week is #9000 “as I love the number nine and anything divisible by nine!” Being Jo is from South Africa she might recognize this valley view from the Shale Trail at Karoo Botanical Garden in Worcester. Some absolutely wonderful plants grew along this short loop trail but I didn’t tarry long because here it was sweaty warm under the afternoon sun.
Judy chose #11 for “the number of National Wildlife Refuges I have volunteered at since I went full-time.” Oregon Caves is a National Monument, instead of a Wildlife Refuge, and is closed during winter when I volunteered there. Thank goodness for snow shoes to get around outside but once in the cave it was a balmy 42F.
Sherry chose #1010 for her “childhood phone number.” I give a 10 to the experience of flying over Grand Canyon after rafting the Colorado River, also a 10. And of course this is not the canyon. Even familiar landscapes look a whole lot different from the air and I’ve driven that paved road, SR89A in the lower corner, many times.
Firefly chose #5651 “by closing my eyes and punching numbers.” I’m sure he doesn’t close his eyes when driving to Knysna Lagoon not to far from where he lives in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I enjoyed this pre-sunset view from the deck of Guinea Fowl Lodge with friends.
Erin chose #21 because “it’s the site number we’re in here at the campground.” Which is in Gulf Shores, Alabama where it’s been raining a lot lately. Takes a lot of rain to grow ferns like these found in the California Redwoods where I often hiked when working at Oregon Caves National Monument.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun. If you’d like to leave a number between 1 and 9500 in a comment maybe you can see your chosen image next week. Which one is your favorite from this week?
Remember to check out the Geogypsytraveler Facebook page for more photos as I label all the images from South Africa I post every 100th shot.
Lovely collection of photos! I like that shot of the ferns. I lived in Eureka, California, during my teen years and I have fond memories of the redwood forests. I moved away when I graduated from HS in ’63, so I’ll chose 63 for my number for next week.
Although I don’t miss all the rainy weather from the PNW I loved wandering in the Redwoods. Down for 63.
Thank you for the honey badger Gaelyn. Anything that needed feeding, my sister would most definitely have fed. Love all your pictures. Love the shot from the plane, when Peter was still up to flying, we did a lot of it and had a great time doing it but for me, as you know, snow is the ultimate delight. So snow is my first choice followed by all the others. If you grant me another choice, it would have to be the birth date my of my son,7961. He is a big boy now and, being a professional photographer, often helps his ageing mother.
So fun to share these images and read the different stories from readers. Snow is really not my delight anymore. Must be nice to have a pro in the family. You’re down for 7961.
Hi Gaelyn – Thanks for the waterfall! The only thing similar here in Saudi Arabia would be the King Fahd Fountain off the coast of Jeddah in the Red Sea – one of the biggest fountains in the world. I also loved the Yarnell shot (used to drive through there countless times when I lived In Prescott) and the snow shot, as it’s pretty hot here right now and just looking at snow cools me down! For this week, I’ll pick # 531 – for May 31 – the day I’ll be traveling back to the states for the summer. Hope to see you during my short excursion to AZ!!!
Glad to help with the cool down although I could live forever without any more snow. I sure hope you can make it to the North Rim while you’re here. You’re down for 531. Have a safe journey.
Thanks for #11. Snow is always fun to see… in pictures! 😉
I’d rather see snow in photos than for real anymore.
Hi, I liked the photo of the Shale Trail at Karoo Botanical Garden in Worcester with the blue sky. I pick nr 8586 for next week. It is the last 4 digits of my phone number. Have a nice weekend.
I’d like to revisit Karoo Botanical Garden when it’s not quite so warm. You’re down for 8586.
I love the stories that go along with all these pictures. I am shocked at the swing out there on a cliff. Very cool. And really actually cold if you were snowshoeing around while volunteering at the closed at the Oregon Caves National Monument. Interesting volunteering when a place is closed. They don’t do that at the North Rim obviously. So let me choose number 7777 for absolutely no reason at all. Well 7 is a good number since that’s my birthdate and my daughter’s. Different months, different years but same date.
I’m pretty much done with snow myself. No winter volunteers at the North Rim but a few employees do stay. Got you down for 7777.
I especially like the honey badger and its story. I’ll go for 248.
Down for 248. See ya’ in about a week?
That swing would be fun to relax on. We are off on holiday on Monday and I have no idea how often I will get on the net so will keep all further Porsche models until my return. Keep well, will be back in June sometime or maybe I will pop in before if I get the chance. Diane
Have a wonderful holiday!
“Honey Badger don’t care. Honey Badger don’t give a %^$&!” LOL!!! Brilliant photos as always. Random awesomeness!!!
It was cute but with those claws I stood back a bit. What, no number choice this week?
A great selection Gaelyn. That Badger seems determined to get out of there. 🙂
It had a record of escaping one time found in the VC having made quite a mess.
Love the ferns, the bench, and the winter shot the best – all look like great places to visit. Will not visit the N Rim – we’re staying in Rio Verde and will do day hikes. (If we can survive the over 100 degree heat!)
Have fun and drink plenty of wine. I mean water. 😉
OMW I have never been to Worcester Botanical Gardens. I LOVE Bot gardens. Must drag Grant there next time, LOL! I loved seeing the view from Guinea Fowl Lodge with you that night in March and again today! We think we saw a Honey Badger last night and a few nights back. It’s too quick for my camera skills to capture it at night – but we ‘ll keep trying. My number for next week is 5669, the last four digits of my Smartphone here in Tz! Have the greatest weekend, my dear friend. (((Hugs))) Jo
All the captures bring back wonderful memories for me. Was glad to see the Honey Badger during daylight so I could get photos. You’re down for 5669.
I appreciate the 1010 shot from the air. I just love having a window seat. For next week, I will pick 737 since I seem to spend a lot flying these past few months! Have a great weekend, Gaelyn!!
Shots from airplanes are rather cool giving such a different perspective. Hope you’re getting the window seat for all these flights. Got you down for 737.
You are probably the most diverse nature photographer in the whole world, or at least on the north rim. Great shots.
Thanks Yogi. Now if I could just get all these photos labeled. Still working on South Africa and have been home almost two months.
All great picks and pics. We have a beautiful world. MB
Those ferns would have gotten a good wash here 😉 Raining again, but at least we had a week of sunshine first. Let’s go with 411 for my birthday for next week’s photo.
Sorry to hear it’s still raining. Good for the ferns though. You’re down for 411.
This is such a fun way to showcase the amazing diversity of the places where you’ve traveled! I wonder what you were doing at Oregon Caves when it was closed? It sure looks cold there.
Most of that winter at Oregon Caves I was cave cleaning. Plus I spoke to some cave clubs to enlist their help.
Some stunning pics again. Love the waterfall and pool at Golden Gate, wouldn’t mind to have your back porch view and the Knysna afternoon view is amazing. I’m a bit late this week what with being away so will play again next week.
