After the first of two days in Addo Elephant National Park I was beginning to think it should have been named Warthog instead because they were everywhere.
Male Warthogs have four warts, females only two. The young have none but do have what looks like a large white handlebar mustache. This could be easily mistaken for tusks which grow with age. Some may describe them as ugly yet after seeing so many down on their knees crunching away at the grasses they began to grow on me.
There was plenty of evidence that elephants were around and eventually on the second day some where seen along the road eating and taking advantage of the water as well. There seemed to be a lack of elephants during my first visit also.
So I guess the name Addo Elephant National Park doesn’t need to change after all.
I’m loving the journey. I think g oing to your blog is better than going to a zoo (as you suggested in the previous post). Not as good as going on safari myself, but that’s not going to happen..so I thank you for sharing yours!.
Safari is definitely best.
I love warthogs. They so amuse me how they run with their tails up straight in the air like little flags :-)))) Diane
I think they’re rather cute. Even bought a small ceramic one in Hogsback.
So glad we got to see some elephants. Surely there must be more elephants than warthogs or it would be named differently. Right? Maybe they are all in some other area of the park. How large a place is the park? Do they have herd size estimates? Oh dear….I am asking too many questions of someone having such a wonderful time and with only sometimes internet access. Sorry.
The tall trees make it difficult to see the elephants until they come into the open like where the Warthogs hang out. I’ll try to answer those questions in another post when I get home.
Just caught up on your posts. We didn’t spend much time in South Africa, even though it was our gateway to Botswana. Still plan to do a self-catering trip there in the coming years … in the meantime, I have to make do with virtual trips like this one.
I hope to go to Botswana on my next trip.
I’ve always thought warthogs were kind of cute. Would love to see a real one…
They are really cute. You should go on safari.
I wish I had more time (and money) so that I could visit Addo on a more regular basis. Such an amazing park.
It’s right in your backyard.
I’m working backwards through your adventure, Gaelyn. Fabulous. Would love to see an elephant in the wild, in their native land, native habitat. Very cool.
The elephants are my favorite. So when do you go on safari? 😉
That’s funny as I only saw one warthog the entire time I was in South Africa! But how cute is he? Love those shots of Pumbaa =)
In three weeks of various parks I’ve seen more Pumbaa than anything else. Even bought a little ceramic figure in Hogsback.
Very interesting. I like the elephants best two but that is some interesting info. Of course the males have more warts….that’s only fair.
Maybe the females get more warts with wartopause. 😉
Thanks for sharing… you make me feel almost there!! 😉
Special places… I hope our grand children will have the privilege of seeing some of these sights!!
I too hope our grandchildren get to see these amazing places and animals.
