While researching possible places to visit in Africa I put Victoria Falls high on my list. Known by the original people as “Smoke that Thunders” the falls mark the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. I’m thinking this might be the perfect place to fulfill my wish to take a hot air balloon ride.

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Claimed to be the largest waterfall in the world with a width of 5604 feet (1708 m) and a height of 354 feet (108 m) that forms the largest sheet of falling water in the world. During the wet season, peak flood being March and April, the falls may not be visible from the ground due to the powerful mist and during the dry season, November and December, the rocky basalt cliffs may be visible. I’ll take the view however I can.
Is Victoria Falls on you bucket list?
Tour more of the world at Our World Tuesday.
I think a hot air balloon ride over Victoria Falls would be great. Bobbie and I got married in a hot air balloon… it is so quiet and slow, a great way to study the landscape below.

I haven’t been in one, yet.
Never had a hot air balloon ride but that would be one mighty fine place to get quietly airborne alright……
Am amazing place to visit but timing needs to be right. At the end of the dry season it is not so exciting. In the middle of heavy rains you cannot see it for spray!! Certainly a place I loved and visited many times while it was still very natural. I gather now that you have to pay and it is much more touristy, such a shame, I guess though they cannot spoil the falls as such. Take care Diane
Both sides of the falls are National Parks, so yes you have to pay. I’m thinking Zambia to be the better side even though it’s not as close. I’ll be there in Feb or March so might be before the highest flood. I’ll take it any way though.
The Zimbabwean side you can see more of the falls than from Zambia, but it is still pretty spectacular from the Zambian side.
I’d like to take a tour there and see both sides.
By air…or ground…hope you get to see the falls! I agree – a hot air balloon ride would be fabulous!!
What a gorgeous place, however you see it, but a balloon ride would be awesome!! I have taken a fantastic balloon ride just a few years ago and it was fantastic!! I loved being able to look the eagle in the eye!!
I absolutely love your idea of looking an African eagle in the eye.
A wonderful adventure. I applaud your spirit for getting out there!
Thanks Daniel. I’m really not a stay at home kind of gal.
OMG, that would be wonderful, but it is scary for me! Gogogo!
WOW! That is a wonderful piece to have on the bucket list. You must do it! This is a big one. Incredible…..on my list as well. Well not the hot air balloon….not a fan of the heights:) There’s some incredible wildlife around this area……I want to come:)
I’ll let you know when I book my flight so you can too. Then you stay on the ground and take pics of me in the balloon. 😉
It most certainly is on my list, and I think the balloon idea sounds perfect!
Wow, that would be a fantastic flight – a whole different perspective. Looks like the earth just got a gigantic crack in it, creating the falls!
Hi Gaelyn, even though I spent my early childhood in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and have lived in Africa all my life, I have never seen the Falls. I will see it one day, amen ! You will enjoy it in Feb/March I’m sure. The hot-air balloon will make the view spectacular! You have such an adventurous spirit! You go girl! (((hugs))) Jo
The Victoria Falls is right at the top of my “Travel to do” list for one day when I have some extra cash in the kitty. The Vic falls would surely be one of the absolute highlights of your trip.
Sounds like a wonderful trip Gaelyn! Victoria Falls is high on my hubby’s list. It will be amazing to see the falls from a hot air balloon.
Which ever way you choose to see the falls I am envious. They must be spectacular.
I’d love to see the falls. Africa, anyway I can do it is on my bucket list.
What a gorgeous place. I love the scene from your vantage point. And the rainbow effect on the falls is magical.
I love the dreams you dream! This is going to be another fantastic experience.
That would be an awesome place for a balloon ride. Actually awesome just to see it!
A balloon ride over the falls sounds fantastic:) You must also try the white water rafting which can be very exciting, especially during the low water season.
By the way, don’t confuse high water season with wet season – in Feb/March you may still get quite a lot of rain as it is towards the end of the wet season but the river may still be very low….
If you are coming thru Jo’burg please let me know – I may be in town and perhaps we could meet up?
Sue
Thanks for the info Sue. I had read about the white water rafting also. I will be flying into Jo’burg but don’t have a firm date yet. But I will let you know. Would love to meet you.
Have fun… stay away from the crocks, hippo/s, big ears… lions… buffalo… some of the spiders, snakes… people… have fun!! 😉
