After seeing the sun dog and halo we rushed to the rim for sunset at Toroweap.
I found a stable looking rock and set up the new tripod.
With Jake just above and behind me I kept bugging him about camera settings. Turning knobs back and forth, clicking away.
The colors of the sky reflected the canyon walls.
Then the colors faded.
And we walked the mile back to camp.

Beautiful shots and excellent color. How do you like using a tripod? I have never used one.
Glad you are home safe and sound. LOL MB
Thanks MB. I love the new tripod. It works great for long exposures and is easy to use. I don’t see myself carrying it around a lot because it’s a little heavy. Going to have to work on the how of carrying it being I’m not carrying a backpack on my bad shoulder.
It is nice to be home watching the birds at the freshly filled feeders.
These are just beautiful, Gaelyn. That new camera must be a lot of fun! xox
Love the sunset colors in such a gorgeous spot. Can’t wait to someday visit you and see all the spots your eyes have seen! Hope you don’t get tired of playing tour guide. May have to tether me to a safe spot!!
Thanks. I never tire of being a tour guide. But I do like my six months off work. I never tether, just advise.
I’m in awe of somebody who can stand that close to the rim with a camera. I couldn’t do it. Not with any kind of a calm stomach. Pics are just gorgeous!!!
I do check out those rocks first to make sure of no Major overhangs.
I have discovered where my tripod is, but now I have to remember to use it! Love these photos, nothing like a good sunset. Wish I understood camera settings. OK so my supermarket special may not have many, but it does have some and I have no idea how they work!! Diane
Time to play with the camera and the tripod.
Beautiful, dramatic skies, Gaelyn, and fantastic captures! I’m getting ready for a tripod — my kids want to know what I want for Christmas — guess what!!! Glad you’re home safe and sound! Enjoy!
I did without a tripod for a long time yet am very happy with it for those long exposures I can’t hold by hand. A great Christmas gift.
Absolutely fantastic photos but I kept wanting to say “please step back from the edge”!
I’ll be careful Mom. 😉
Wonderful photos! A great sky post!
Thanks Hans.
You are most excellent! These shots just keep getting better and better. Keep toggling those knobs….and show me how to do it because I get impatient with them:)
Use the histogram as it tells a lot about how dark or light, then just change it. Of course that’s more of an option on landscapes that hold still unlike birds and butterflies.
Outstanding
Welcome to home (at least for now)! You got some fantastic shots at Toroweap… (Your camera work is so professional…I’m honored you visit me and my puny efforts!).
Thanks Sallie. Out of the hundreds of shots taken I almost always get a few really good ones.
I hate using my tripod, but I’ve got to admit – these are some outstanding crisp photos. Always a treat to see the Canyon at any time of day. Glad you made it home safely.
I don’t see myself lugging the tripod around all the time.
Well I don’t know what to say. I’m just speechless these are so beautiful. Worthy of any coffee table professional photography book I’ve ever seen.
Gee thanks Sherry. You’re making me blush.
Fantastic images here and on your Sun Dog post!
These photos belong to NatGeo, Gaelyn! Wow, you are getting a master of your camera.
P.S. No tripod for me, it is just an extra load, but when I do night shots, I would carry it with me.
Thanks Ebie, that means a lot coming from an excellent photographer like yourself. I won’t be carrying that tripod around everywhere.
Incredible photography here, Gaelyn! Must be the new tripod, eh??
Sunset over the Canyon stays a sight to be behold. Pity its setting behind you though and not over the canyon.
The night before we faced west. Guess I didn’t post those, yet.
Fantastic!
Have a wonderful day!

Photos are so much better using the tripod, especially in low light, but the hiking and handling are a problem. Absolutely beautiful shots! Are you settled for the winter?…Lynda
I’m in Yarnell, wouldn’t say completely settled, but working on it.
Wonderful twilight shots, I see you are still making use of that new tripod. Glad you made it to Yarnell safe and sound. I was going to say “made it home” but I think now the Grand Canyon is as much home as anywhere is.
Home is where I park it. Nice to be back to my winter space. Yet the canyon is my home too. Mike is staying for the winter.
While all of your photos are lovely/glorious/praiseworthy…my favorite is the one with you and your tripod in it. Because, for the first time, I’m seeing you at “work” on your passion. And this makes me decidedly happy.
I asked Jake to take that photo. He was a little nervous about where I was standing. I so rarely get photos of myself. Guess that’s what happens when you travel alone so much. But now I could use the tripod.
Wow – gorgeous shots! I have 3 tripods that I never use. Guess I should get them out from under the bed…
At least one of them anyway.
The light in these photos is just amazing. Great captures, Gaelyn!
stunning place to be for sunset! lovely to see your photos.
Unique! What a treat for yourself and for us…
