Flying to Chicago for my 40th class reunion was awesome (posts coming) but upon my return I needed a vacation. So on the way home from Las Vegas I went camping at Toroweap in the remote western part of Grand Canyon National Park.
On the way I finally bought a good Manfrotto tripod at Camera Country. Such a pleasant surprise to actually find a camera store. And WOW, what a difference this tool will make. So now I have another new thing to learn besides how to make the camera do what I want.
Here’s one of my night time attempts of the moonrise complete with stars.

I often see photographers on the trail with their large tri-pods and know it is not for me. I suppose I have always been a hiker that likes to take photos…rather than a photographer that likes to hike. I have been looking at the idea of a mini-portable one with the flexible feet.
Looking forward to your posts on Chicago. It has been so dry here this year that even the fall colors are a bit lacking.
Thank goodness this tripod is light enough to hike with, short distances, and may become my walking stick.
I did see some color changes way west of the city.
Beautiful…you’re doing something right!
Thanks Pat. There’s a Huge learning curve to this photography thing.
How wonderful….this photo transports a person from reality to outer space. At least I felt this way. Excellent post!

Nice job on the Moon photo sunrise:))
Thanks Al. And also for the neat Picassa tips.
I have one but it is ever around when I want it! Also since moving I have still not tracked it down!
That moonrise is amazing, my poor little camera cannot even see the moon 🙁 Take care Diane
Diane I am really excited about the possibilities with a tripod. Now I just have to remember to take it with me.
A tripod makes a huge difference. I have a cheap little thing, and even that helps. Our nights are getting longer and colder up in the Pacific Northwest. Don’t think I’ll be camping again until late spring. I envy you. – Margy
Margy, I never used the little cheap tripod but believe this one will get some use. I was contemplating a fall trip to the PNW but decided I don’t want to do winter camping. Instead I’ll head further south soon.
Beautiful photo, and congrats on your new tripod. It’s amazing what a difference a good tripod can make… I never go out without one!
Now I’ll just have to get used to carrying it around with me.
Wow what a super great image. I have never used a tripod–maybe I should. I can never get the stars to show up either. How did you do that??? MB
Thanks MB. I have rarely used a tripod before so this will take some getting used to. I set the shutter speed to 30 seconds and dropped the F stop as low as it would go.
I have a Manfrotto tripod too! Loved your photo – beautiful and surreal…
That is one incredible shot!!!!! Wow. Now that is a great night shot. I have to learn how to do those better. Sexy hot!!! Have fun with that tripod.
Thanks Chris. I was rather proud but didn’t think of it as sexy. 😉
Yes, it is sexy! Wonderful, magical and beautiful too!
It’s very sexy my friend. Not everyone captures the moon in that drop dead gorgeous pose!
OK, call it sexy then. 😉
Wow, that moon and the stars are STUNNINGLY captured. Well done, Gaelyn. I will be taking my tripod along on my next trip into the bush, (Sunday evenings) for sure. I have a mini-tripod which fits into the motorbike top box (back luggage) and have taken it along before but never used it. I will be following your amazing learning curve through the photography world and hope some of it rubs off on me! Have a wonderful weekend. (((Hugs))) Jo
Thanks Jo. I never bothered carrying the mini-tripod but this one will get some use. Photography is a Huge learning curve.
Loved seeing photos of the family. Kids have grown so much since I saw them.
Moon rise,a very rare shot i would say.
I am so busy catching up on blog posts. Love the picture!
Gorgeous photo — and you got a tripod — I’m impressed. Here at the Lake, I used our outdoor swing set frame as a tripod for my moon pictures… I told Bill I should probably at least get a portable tripod…it would be easier than taking the swing set with us ;> ) …. I saw your comment above that it can be a walking stick — that’s very interesting!
Thanks Sallie. I’m thinking a tripod would be easier than a swing set. This tripod wasn’t sold as a walking stick, but why not. That would be easier than just carrying it.
What a difference a tripod can make…
It’s beautiful!
Stunning photo Gaelyn! you have come a long way with your photography since you first started blogging!
Thanks Kathie. That means a lot coming from an excellent photographer like you. I guess practice does make better. And the tripod should help a lot.
I need a small tripod os some sort. Maybe one of those that look like a walking stick.
I had a small wobbly tripod that never got used. The new camera is Way too big for that. I think I will use this new one as a walking stick, sometimes, although it wasn’t made as one.
