I woke up to this blurry view from my RV window. Something told me I wouldn’t be driving out the Walhalla.
Repeated whinny question of the morning at the Lodge, “when will it clear up?”
I do not predict weather. Even the weather reporters can’t keep up.
I’ve been here five summers and have only experienced this four times.
They are so lucky. Most visitors won’t see this.
Instead they will show vacation photos of an intense blue sky over the warm washed layers of orange, yellow, cream and green.
The scene so quickly changing.
Breath of the dragon swirls around the temples.
Now you see it.
Now you don’t.
It’s magic.
Just stunning!!!! Magical!
The very first time I went to the Grand Canyon that’s how it was. The next day when we went back it was clear skies forever. Actually, I think it was even more awesome with the clouds.
It is magic. I’d love to see this. I imagine cool to coldish temps and smiling at the “fog”/cloud cover. What a nice way to get your day started….and the pictures make it look like a dream. I can count on my hand how many times we’ve had fog here in Tucson. Never forget those incidents:)
Everything about the fog, except driving, was truly magical. Of course later that day it poured hard rain and briefly I saw sleet.
Looks like RVSue sent you some of the fog she has been seeing in Oregon! Breathtaking photos Gaelyn! The Grand Canyon was certainly very grand on this day!
Amazing photos,, thanks so much for sharing these with us all. Keep well Diane
The pics in this post are just magical, Gaelyn!
The photos are spectacular. You always have such a positive viewpoint. Hopefully the current visitors will also get to see it with the sun shining.
Thanks Colleen. I don’t think anyone got more than brief glimpses of the canyon on that whole day.
These are awesome!! I’d love to see all that mysterious fog! It certainly gives a different view of Grand Canyon than I’ve ever seen there! Magic indeed! Really terrific captures, Gaelyn! Have a great weekend!
Oh how beautiful! When will it clear – are you kidding? Well just wave your magic wand and make sure they get what they want.
Wonder what the folks doing a rim to rim thought of this??
It poured that day, even in the canyon’s top 4-5 miles. It would be a little eery to hike it in fog. I’d want to be close the cliffs.
I agree, those are magical views and shots.
“Breath of the dragon swirls around the temples.” Beautiful imagery and beautiful images! Magical indeed!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Hope you’d come and see my sky shots also. Your comment will be greatly appreciated.
Have a great weekend!

Truly magic…beautiful photos and views you have! Sure beats the “cut it with a knife” smoke/smog air driving I-15 south through Salt Lake City and Provo! Sure hope Arches NP is not like this. Lynda
I have seen the Grand Canyon a couple of times and family is planning to go there for Spring break in 2013. I am so lucky to see fog at this National Park. It looks so magical. Thank you for posting these amazing shots.

Very cool, Gaelyn!
Our weather down here in the desert is finally starting to temper a bit… haven’t seen 100 in a while & it is supposed to drop into the 60s tonight! Tsssss… like cold water hitting a hot frypan!
Gorgeous. You were lucky to get these photos….and the light is really good.
How fortunate you were to capture such exquisite beauty!!
These are some awesome Canyon photos Gaelyn. Glad you were there to see the mist!
We were there 2 weeks ago, just briefly at the S Rim. Wish we could have stayed longer!!! LOVE these shots! The dragon’s breath ones are particularly beautiful!!!
Beautiful and unusual Grand Canyon skies! Wonderful post.
I don’t care if I’m being repetitive!! Absolutely stunning!! These must be of the best shots you have ever posted of the Canyon!!
As you say… something so rare should be appreciated and not whinged about!!
We’re rather fortunate that you were there to see it and capture the moment (s) for us! Thanks!
Beautiful, I grew up in the west and didn’t hardly ever see fog. It still seems magical to me.
Thought I would check in on you today. Gorgeous pictures! Been trying to get back there for quite awhile. Thanks for the pics. Would have loved to hear the bagpipes too. I’ll be heading back down south myself in a couple weeks. Looking forward to it.
Although I would love to see it under blue skies and sunshine as well, it must be awesome seeing this as well. Great contrasts.
Gaelyn, you have morphed into a poet!
Occasionally. 😉
Wow – you’re right, those of us who only visit for a couple of days don’t know what we’re missing
we used to get that at the statue…”it’s cloudy. i climbed all the way to the crown & couldn’t see out the windows.”
the only responses to that are:
1. well was it not cloudy when you started?
2. geez you should have let us you you were coming, we would have gladly put up the clear window picture glass in the crown for you. really.
it’s nature folks…not like the nps can do much about it…at least at the canyon they are outside & seeing things…at the statue they were climbing steps to look out windows to see brooklyn…
awesome pix tho…it snowed when i hit the north rim in spring, 1980. froze my butt off camping!
Lois, sometimes the visitors can be a real pain when they don’t bother to use their brains. Oh, that’s right, they leave them home when going on vacation. That day I suggested we all blow real hard.
I quite frequently snows and is cold at the North Rim in spring, and fall too.
my all time best one was ..”the boat that just left…did i miss it?” ah yes..& so much more. it never failed..no matter which park it was that i worked at…ya get the oh so stupid questions..i always hope that the stupid questions i ask when i visit places are nothing more than “where is the bathroom?” as i stand next to it…
What? You mean you Park Rangers aren’t in charge of the weather? Gosh. Wonderful you manage to maintain a good attitude with repeated dumb questions like that!) It’s gorgeous and mysterious in the fog. Lovely pictures.
I guess the visitors often think we manage the weather.
