People often ask where the best place to watch sunset is while visiting the North Rim. Anywhere from Bright Angel Point and all along the Transept trail which runs on the western side of the peninsula.
My favorite place is Cape Royal because of the east, south and west views. However, I don’t really like the very dark 45-minuet drive back when wildlife can abound. Or bound in front of your vehicle.
If you like to be waited on and enjoy an adult beverage or snacks hang out at the Grand Lodge either in the sunroom or out on the veranda. All these photos were taken from the east veranda looking south with sunset reflected off the clouds.
To enjoy skies from around the world go to Sky Watch Friday.
All those places sound wonderful to view the sunset! Except for that dark drive — you need a magic carpet for that one!
Sallie, sometimes I wish for a magic carpet, or beam me up Scotty.
Gorgeous views. Hard to believe they were taken from a building instead of being out on that point.
Colleen, the views from the point are very similar without the closeup vegetation. Makes it nice for those who don’t want to walk very far.
Any skies are spectacular over the Grand Canyon – lucky you to have so many spots for sunset gazing.
When are you coming to join me in some sky gazing Barb?
Those photos just make me sigh! Too lovely to be real even though I know they are.
They’re real alright Sherry. You really need to come see for yourself.
I’ve been there Gaelyn. I just didn’t get to stay long enough. Like months. And my pictures never captured the beauty like yours do. But I can’t wait to get back and stay longer. Especially now that I know some boondocking sites.
Hopefully your next visit will be much longer Sherry. Lots of great boondocking sites plus don’t forget I can get you a site in the employee campground too. Which is only $15/night with full hookups.
Is there really a bad viewpoint? Great images!
Yogi, there are NO bad views of Grand Canyon. Only different.
Thanks for the tips. Do you know that that was the hardest thing for me this past year? I was trying to find a place to snap shots along the South Rim for that perfect sunset shot and I kept walking and walking chasing the sun…..I got off one shot that I really loved. I hope to capture that iconic Arizona shot better. As a child growing up in Wisconsin, I always dreamt of the magical places in this state because of my yearly subscription to Arizona Highways. One place that I haven’t been is Havasu Falls. It really is a large state full of incredible wonders and I’m hoping my other half gets some time off for awhile so that we can spend some quality time on the North Rim. Plus I want to see those buffalo:) And then of course, there is a certain Park Ranger I’d like to meet in person and thank for all the wonderful shots she takes and shares with us:) All my best. Chris
Chris, on the South Rim I liked Lipan Point for sunset. You’ll love Havasu Falls. Only beefalo on the North Rim, and a Ranger who loves to share the canyon with all.
Fantastic views and skies, beautiful images, they look like paintings!
Why search for a better place when you’ve got this from the veranda…and a drink to boot!
I would love to see the skies for myself but it will never happen. Never mind I love seeing these wonderful views, both rain and sun, through your eyes. Some great shots here. Diane
