The Kaibab squirrel only lives in a 40 square mile area on the north side of Grand Canyon amongst the Ponderosa Pine. Can you see its white fuzzy tail right in the middle of the photo?
There it is, staring at me, up a tree.
And there it goes.
I’ve written more about Kaibab squirrels and their cousin Abert here.
They are so cute with their white tails and pointy ears. I know people say they’re just dressed up rats, but I love squirrels (except when they get into the cottage).
Actually I quite like rats too, but my husband won’t let me get one as a pet.
I have never heard of the Kaibab squirrel and found your post and photos fascinating! I guess it would be an endangered species. Here on BC, we have four species of squirrels: Eastern Grey (with Black Squirrels being a melanistic subgroup), Red, Douglas and Flying. I have never seen the Flying Squirrel as they are nocturnal, but I hope to one of these days. The others are very common but I still love to see them. I have a couple of pictures of a Black Squirrel in my most recent post.
I had to look a while to find him in that first photo, pretty good camoflage even with that bushy white tail. what an interesting little fellow — I must have missed your earlier posts because I don’t think I’d ever heard of it. Off to read those now.
It looks like he is escaping from the Ranger. Little does he know that he shouldn’t be afraid.
We had a lot of squirrels in Illinois, I don’t see too many here at Mesa Verde. When I was at the North Rim, I did not see any of these squirrels, although I had read about them.
Thanks for always commenting on my posts! Love the squirrel shots.
your squirrel shots are beautiful!
love those little guys!
big hugs.
Glad you posted more than one photo…had a heck of a time finding him in the first one until you said ‘white fuzzy tail’! Sorry I missed so many posts…hope to be back commenting now fairly regularly. –I love squirrels and my daughter’s dog goes nuts (pun intended) when he sees one…and the chase is on. A chase he never wins.
I’ve only seen a Kaibab squirrel once, and I considered it a special treat. Great captures of him, Gaelyn.
