Thursday morning, truck hooked to 5th-wheel in the KOA, but I couldn’t get out of the space because of trees in the way. And then I cried. In tears I called FabGrandma and Grandpa and he came over and guided me out backwards. I can barely believe I backed up.
Finally on the road I made it to Marble Canyon in time to meet Lyn for lunch.
Then the last leg of the journey home.
Very little snow, which is scary for the forest.
Finally home, parked, level and with my friend.
What an ordeal you have been thru with the vehicles. Glad you are happy and back with your Honey. 🙂
I can deeply empathize with your trailer back-up. I tried that once with a small U-Haul and it was awful. Finally realized you kind of have to think backwards. Glad you have your sweetie to come home to.
FabGrandma and Grandpa do seem fabulous! So glad they could help you back out of your campsite! Just one more frustration piled onto a few days heaped with such gawdawful frustrations would have had me in tears too! Now, you take a deep breath, snuggle in your sweeties arms and relax. Summer begins!
I’m so glad you made it home safe and sound! What a crazy adventure you’ve had getting there.
Congratulations on finally making it home.
“Very little snow, which is scary for the forest.” Scary for the whole world. Times they are a’changin.

Glad you finally made it. Hate breakdowns and extended warranty issues, but being with your sweetie..priceless!
What? ROAD CLOSED? What’s that about? Did you turn green and shred your shirt (but not pants) turning into the Incredible Hulk? Did you roar out of the truck, hurling barricades to their demise over the edge of the road?
I’m confused, too . . . Road closed? And where is home? Is the North Rim home?
You’ve had enough troubles . . . Time to get back to enjoying life!
The road is closed because the North Rim is not open to the public until May 15th. Those of us who work there have the gate code, so no problem.
So glad you made it. Backing trailers or boats– haven’t done that in a while and it gives me butterflies!
Enjoy getting re-settled.
Especially joyful to reach the end of your journey when you have had difficulties. Time to settle in now.
Some time that you are not in a rush to be somewhere find a big parking lot to practice backing up. Buy some cheap dollar store cones so if they get damaged it’s not a great loss.
If you are doing it by yourself you want to be backing in from the driver’s side so you can see the path the trailer is taking. Don’t be scared of getting out often to make certain you are not going to hit anything with the trailer and the truck.
The easiest way to steer the truck is to hold the steering wheel near the bottom. If you want the trailer to go left push up to the left on the wheel. If you want to go right push the wheel up on the right.
Before you know it you’ll lose the fear of backing up and be driving like a pro. Be Safe and Enjoy!
It’s about time.
Thank goodness you made it! I was wondering and your headline made me think the truck broke down again! Is that rope across until the park opens? We’d drive in for a hike that first week of May when we’re road tripping.
Oh Gaelyn — I just read the last two posts at once and so this was easier on my heart — because I got to immediately see the happy ending after all your trauma.
I remember being in a line up of cars for opening day at the North Rim in May 92. Had no idea it was opening day. Just came to the end of a line up & had to get out & ask what the hold up was. Those were different travel days back then. Had never even heard the terms RV, Boondocking, 5th wheel, etc. Always feels pretty nice reaching your destination after long travel days eh………
I think you were probably just overwhelmed with all the truck problems because your meltdown over backing up just doesn’t sound like you. Backing up can be intimidating but you have to be able to do it if you are going to haul.
Good friends who will rush to your aide, beautiful scenery and your sweetie, what more could a gal ask for? Well, maybe some more precipitation.
I think it was just a BAD week for everyone. That means next week has to be better, right? : )
There is nothing worse than backing up a trailer in amongst trees or buildings, I know the feeling well, I am glad that you got out and no problems. Hope now that you are settled for summer and that with Mike’s support you will very soon relax. Take care Diane
I hope its not going to be a dry summer for you seeing that there was little snow. Lets hope for some rain.
I’m bound and determined to learn to back our little cargo trailer. My head knows the principles involved, but my hands and feet just don’t get it! I also figure that if I ever do get the little camper trailer of my dreams, I’ll just play damsel in distress at any campground I go to. Men are such suckers for it…….
