It was dry when we left the North Rim yet looking back from House Rock Valley this mushroom rain cloud hovered over the Kaibab Plateau. Of course the rain may not have been hitting the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

That looks like something out of science fiction. A wonderful shot indeed.
I have never heard of virga, interesting. Great photo. Diane
It DOES look like something from SF; aliens lurk? Love the colors, too.
Best place in the world for cloud watching!
Anxious to see your report on the Lake Powell trip, too…
I love the color and shape of the cloud. Those big landscapes with a wide open sky make for great views.
What a lovely lilac cloud. Great shot!
One should always be looking up as much as down when looking for picture opportunities.
You can really see forever out there. I learned a new word, Virga.
such a gorgeous site!
What a pretty sky! I can't believe your time at the Canyon is over for another season, Gaelyn. Safe trip to Yarnell.
Very nice photo.
Regards and best wishes
Cool looking cloud. We have been having some weird clouds around here too. Lots of Lenticulars over the mts. MB
Is that an anvil cloud? Its colors are beautiful, but a storm is probably brewing below it. Happy skywatching!
Love that photo – and all the rest, too, for that matter! Growing Old With Grace http://growing-old-with-grace.blogspot.com/
