Last Sunday afternoon the biggest storm I’ve ever seen moved across the canyon.
I took seven minutes of video from inside the Lodge then pulled stills of the lightning.
A fellow Ranger had to go out and tell people to get away from the edge of the veranda and go inside the building. Some people are oblivious. “I JUST wanted a photo.” Duh.
And then came the rain and wind as the storm descended upon the North Rim obliterating the South Rim and the canyon from view for about 30 minutes.
As the clouds cleared and the sun appeared the reward shone through.
And even though I missed the rainbow to the south while closing the Visitor Center I enjoyed the one to the east.
Followed by the clouds parting for the sun to spread its rays.
And continued the show.
I had to leave for dinner so missed the final sunset.
Yet the full moon greeted me upon my return for an evening program.

How wonderful that you captured the magic of this great storm! I love really wild weather, it is so stimulating with all the flashing and crashing and good old Thor hitting his anvil till the sparks fly down to earth. Wonderful, wonderful captures!!!
Wow Gaelyn those shots are fantabulous!! It sure lasted a loooong time.
As for the Owl. If I had a frontal view then I wouldn't be guessing. LOL. From a side view I see some front feathers and am leaning towards a Barred. MB
You are living the dream.

Spectacular display! A storm like that with the canyon as the backdrop must have been so exciting.
That was quite a storm, and you captured it well. The rainbow is just amazing. How cool to see it stretch across the sky over the vast canyon.

What a sequence of photos, Gaelyn! Those lightning strikes are so powerful and the rainbow so glorious. You need to frame these.
Oh Gaelyn, these are absolutely awesome. I know you cheated a bit, but the lightning pics are the best. I'm still trying to take a proper one.
Great captures.
Regards and best wishes

What an amazing set of photos recording what looks like one heck of a storm.
Wonderful series, Gaelyn! You have a little of everything on your skywatch. I really love the lightning captures and the rainbows are always a favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing your skies, have a great weekend.
I had to come back and look at these again, Gaelyn – once in a lifetime captures!
An amazing storm. I've never been able to capture lightening on film. Probably my cheap handheld camera. My husband and I flew a plane to the Grand Canyon for our honeymoon. We were grounded by weather for a few extra days, but finally were able to get out under the clouds (too much ice up above). – Margy
Oh My, what a scene! Wish I could have been there. Great captures! What drama!
Oh wow beautiful photos, What do you use to pull pictures from your video. just interested. Diane
