“Your mission which you should accept because you don’t have a choice is to become familiar with the sights and sounds of the South Rim.”
Cloud shadows over the North Rim
This was our first day of Grand Canyon training challenge in May on the South Rim: (Click here for the drive there.)
1. Collect cancellation stamps from the following places: Grand Canyon Visitor Center, Verkamps, Kolb Studio, Yavapai Observation Station, Books-n-more.
2. Take a photo of your team at the following places: Mather Point, Backcountry Office, √El Tovar, √South Kaibab Trailhead, √Yaki Point, √Bright Angel Trailhead, Hopi House, Lookout Studio, Train Depot with visitors getting off or on the train [those with √ shown, we made it to the others also but forgot to get a photo].
3. Take a photo of three different bus drivers.
Kids play about not feeding wildlife
4. Attend one Shrine of the Ages Wildlife Day program.
Turkey Vulture, Big-eared Bat, Harris’ Hawk, Great Horned Owl
5.Take a photo of two different animals including the animal handler.
I was paired with Secret Agent Ranger Jessica who is new to our team this season. However, she is not new to the canyon as she’s been a river runner on the Colorado River. She’s a great gal and we’ve hit it off famously.
Secret Agent Mike was visiting for the weekend so he joined our team and documented some of our covert mission.

We hopped aboard the blue shuttle at Maswik Lodge then transferred to the green shuttle near Mather Point headed for the South Kaibab Trailhead.

Next stop was Yaki Point, then back on the green shuttle to the visitor center and book store for cancellation stamps.
Then we walked to Mather Point and continued on the .7 mile (1.1 km) to Yavapai Observation Station for photos which are on Jessica’s spy camera along with several others.
By now we were getting hungry and thirsty. Plus wanted to watch the Native dancers…
…at Hopi House.

Ha! That "Secret Agent Man" song was running through my head the entire time! LOVE LOVE LOVE that first pic of the South Rim – OMG! Gorgeous!
From reading the first line I was waiting for the tape to destruct:) Great post with a bit of fun attached. Diane
The Mission apparently was not impossible. What a great training session. I wanna train too. Or I may self-destruct. MB
What fun! I feel quite breathless after all that undercover action – lol.
Gaeyln: That was a neat trip around the canyon.
This looks like you were "secretly" having a lot of fun while fulfilling your "mission." Cool. I want a job like that!
Some really nice photos in this post.
What a fun job you have! Your pictures are fascinating, great post!
I really enjoyed this post Gaelyn.. It is so much fun to have watched the specials on the National Parks and then know some of the places and names you mention….Michelle
The next mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to…
It was a lot of fun to go on that "Mission"! Especially since I was in the company of such excellent agents!
The boys at HQ had no idea what the world was in for when they turned you two loose!
Great pictures. it looks like you guys had a great time. I made it out to the Canyon last summer right about this time. So hot out there! 🙂

Looks like you had great fun. 🙂
Day 2 appeared to be packed full of adventure – it is rare to find such jamm packed activities at most venues. Thank you for the wonderful insights Gaelyn.
I spent a day at the South Rim about 6 years ago, and I thought it was breathtaking and wonderful. Wish I could spend more time exploring all the trails, taking part in the activities and getting to know the area.
What a good way to explore a place through something like a treasure hunt. Awesome idea. Also looks like you had a great time doing it.
Looks like it was amazing fun! I need a tall ice tea just reading this.
Bright angels indeed. That was a cute idea.
