The ring-porous Gambel Oak is susceptible to freeze induced embolism. And the best I can figure is Saturday’s snow and cold (next post down) caused a colorful fall like reaction.

Wow, that's amazing Gaelyn. When will you have summer, I ask? (((Hugs))) Jo
I have to say looking out the window here I am not sure we are ever going to get summer. It is cool, grey and wet. Not a typical French summer at all. By this time the grass is normally dry and brown! The weather the world over seems to be doing strange things. Diane
Surprising fall-like colors. You sure are having unpredictable weather at the north rim. 🙂
Ain't nature wonderful—yet surprising.

Oh my goodness!! That WAS a fast summer wasn't it? LOL!! Love those colors in the plant though.
Such a change in such a short time. Some plants really can't stand the cold. If you can't stand the heat, get out the kitchen, but in this case if you can't stand the cold, move down to the lowlands
Well, Gaelyn, it's snowing again here in my forest. I only hope my garden survives this erratic spring!
You are tuned into the seasons Gaelyn and notice what many others would not. Love the colours and the barren ground around the plant.
Oh Gaelyn!! If you ended up missing summer, I would cry for you. I'm not the blubbering type, but it's the principle of weeping for those who weep.
This year is full of surprises. I suspect summer will return, probably with a vengence.
Oh gosh, I hope summer comes back. I can see some foliage turning yellow outside my window. 🙁
Gaelyn, I love your photos and even more, I love your outlook!
Happy trails!
How funny to see this now!
This year has definitely been full of surprises — here in the northwest as well. It has been weird year. Love your photos as always, but I'm not ready for fall colors yet!! Hope you have a great week, Gaelyn!
Sylvia
wow, you're still getting some snow. the colors in the 2nd photo is beautiful. fall colors in summer? amazing.
What gorgeous colours! I do hope the sun comes back though.
Oh, oh, if you missed summer, I hope you'll get another one here shortly.
I've been catching up on your blog. I'm glad to hear Mike will be spending the summer at the Canyon with you. You'll be able to do some great side trips together. I also loved your post on the Cradle of Humankind. Very interesting.
Nothing here is now going to be freeze-induced. It's hot, hot, hot.
Love those colors on this plant.
Gaelyn: Very cute, you did miss Summer.
