Emerald and Angle moth by porch light
Mike leaves the porch light on all night which invites a variety of moths.
Emerald moth from the Geometer family
During my last visit to Yarnell I found all these moths within about a 5 foot (1.5 meters) radius of the porch light.
Maybe a Large Yellow Underwing moth introduced from Europe
They were all pretty small, .5 to 1 inch (1.27 to 2.54 cm).
Unknown
And very difficult to identify, so please feel free to help with that.
Unknown
Even with my Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America,
Maybe a Gypsy moth, hey my namesake
and bugguide,
Maybe Dysstroma genus also known as Carpets
I could only guess on most of these.
Maybe Eupithicia genus commonly called pugs
Yet they are all beautiful.
Possibly another Eupithicia
And I’m continuing to learn about moths.
I leave the light on so they can have a place to hang out without getting into too much trouble, besides, the spider and I have a deal… I leave the light on so he can get plenty to eat, and he won't come in the house and bother me! LOL
What a variety! I really like that second photo of the green moth. I've seen some of these around here, but sorry, I don't have a clue about their identity.
They are all lovely but I really like the Emerald Moth. Diane
those first two moth pics are my favorite. you captured quite the variety by porch light. hope all is well.
So many different kinds! Now I feel inspired to go out in the dark to see what species our porch light is attracting. 🙂
howdee,
Nice collection of Moths..I have no idea what kind..but enjoy the photos!
Lovely selection. I love the second huge unknown moth.
Even though they are small, they do come in the most wonderful colors and patterns. A great collection Gaelyn.
Mike – that is very clever of you. LOL!!
That's quite a collection of Moths. MB
That's quite a variety of moths. I have a moth photo coming up…
One of those looks just like a leaf. Isn't nature wonderful?
So many different kinds of moths around just one porch light! Wow! My cat catches the big ones and lets them loose in the house…I run around with a butterfly net in the wee hours of the morning to get them back outside. They sound like jets flying through our bedroom at night.
Gaelyn: Mike really knows how to attract some neat critter, love the green one.
There is a lot to be learned about moths..I need to get out there..great post Gaelyn…
Gaelyn, You've gone buggy in Yarnell! That new camera is taking some fabulous shots (or is it you?).
You do attract quite a wide collection of moths there don't you? Ever thought of starting an actual collection.
