If you want flowering plants or a garden around here your fence better be javelina proof. Javelina are not pigs but are related to swine and hippopotami. They are collared peccaries and came north from South America. Javelina are omnivores and eat roots, seeds, grass, fruit and small animals.
Mike’s fence in progress isn’t critter proof yet. Some of you asked about javelinas. I posted last year here and here about these interesting creatures.

Fuzzy little guys….they would be a treat to see in this neighborhood. Looks like they have good coats for the snow you are getting. We get possums and skunks and raccoons up here in western washington state.
My Dad and his friends had me scared to death of javelinas when we lived in Payson, Arizona. I have yet to see one in the wild.
these used to be on Catalina Island when we camped. they were kind of scarey. yours look sweet actually.
They look like they could be trouble!!!! At least they don't have opposable thumbs like our raccoons!
I just think these guys are too cute! I would love to see some in the wild, especially those little babies! How much fun to have them around. The fence is looking good, I love all the details.
They sure look like pigs.
He's quite an artist. I sure hope the Javelina don't try to tear it down, it's too pretty.
My friend who is a rehabber in AZ has talked about these guys. I guess I won't be seeing any here in NY.. I like the fence…Michelle
Love your peccaries. Easy for me to do since I have a great spoft spot fot European wild pigs with their stripy piglets.
The fence is shaping beautifully and looking at Mike, … well he's a real cutie!
Interesting animals, these javelinas -you can see that they're related to the swine..
These guys look hungry and determined. Will your fence be strong enough to keep them out? I do like the look of the fence though. Here the critter we need to keep out of the garden is the moose, and it takes a pretty high fence to keep them out, especially if there is cabbage.
Gaelyn, the fence is lovely and I learned something new yesterday. I had no idea we had javelina in North America. Great stuff and thank you.

I've seen Javalinas, Gaelyn. They're pretty cool. The COOLEST thing, though, is that fence!!! WAY!
What cool critters they are. I haven't seen one in the wild. I ate at the Javelina Cantina in Sedona, though! What a hoot to see these critters in your photos so soon after my trip there! Happy New Year!
That's the first time I've seen javelinas in the snow. Their dark legs sure stand out. I watched a pack of javelinas knock over trash cans on my street early this morning.
I love their fuzzy coats and round bodies. Interesting. Thanks for visiting my blog so regularly. I intend to visit more in the future compared to the last 4 months. I'm off to North Africa on 7th Jan and cannot wait to join dh. I will also have HEAPS of time to blog, visit, comment. Whoo-hoo. Happy New Year to you for 2010. (((Hugs))) Jo
Hi Gaelyn, That fence looks so delicate – will it actually keep out the rotund swine? I see there is a baby – do the Javelina Mamas get mad if you are too close to their young?
I remember you posting about these; it was new to me than. A very happy new year to you! Love the photo of you and your friend Mike.
In that snow they look like they could be hitched up to Santa's sleigh! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Whoa whoa whoa! Are they nice? Regardless, I want to give them a big ol' hug!
They're cute little critters…..too bad they're so naughty!
Well, the fence is looking pretty good but the Javelina checking it out. MB
Well I'll be…
Now I know!
Thanks G
Craig
Such interesting looking creatures but the fence is even more interesting.
