Sisters Grace and Katherin are driving across country from San Jose, California to Massachusetts where they will be attending college. In order to save a little money and meet people along the way they are CouchSurfing and stayed in my little camper/guest house last night. They are two wonderfully amazing young ladies.
What is CouchSurfing you ask? Well, this is what the website has to say: “CouchSurfing is an international non-profit network that connects travelers with locals in over 230 countries and territories around the world. Our mission as an organization is to create inspiring experiences: cross-cultural encounters that are fun, engaging, and illuminating. We have a vision of a world where everyone can explore and create meaningful connections with the people and places they encounter.”
This is my second experience of hosting CouchSurfers. My first couple was Kendra & Peter. She from Portland, Oregon and he from the Czech Republic.
What a wonderful way to travel and meet people from around the world. If you’re interesting in participating check out their site. It seems very above board and safe. I look forward to Surfing some Couches myself in the future.

Gaelyn, this is an interesting post. I am going to check out this site and I think I am loving the name, to its truest meaning!
That sounds like a great way to meet new people and help others at the same time. I'm sure your couch on the North Rim is in demand.
That is so terrific! Wish there had been something like this when I was young and traveling! What a great way to see the world and meet people!
Great post and I love the pics!
Have a great week, Gaelyn!
Sylvia
I had no idea! This is so cool.
Gaelyn, this is great! You are so hospitable, Gaelyn, doing this in your minimal space!
In Holland there is something similar for cyclists. One of our friends decorated their garage for that purpose. I think there is a minimal fee, like $5-, but (big) breakfast is included.
What a perfect way to see the world, save some money but more importantly meet and make lots of new friends. Very cool (and neat that you take part.)
Gaelyn,
The New York Times actually had an article about couch surfing awhile back. Glad you've met some interesting people.
What a special way to share your place! Good idea.
What a great and inexpensive way to travel and meet people, too!
mmmm, I think I would love doing this but Jim, not so much.
What a great idea. Thanks for telling us about this.
Yay for Couchsurfing! I love my CS friends (except for Spyro/"Forrest," the smelly backpacker who almost ruined my NZ road trip!).
Very interesting post. I wish that was in existance when I was a young man.
What fun this could be! I have never heard of it and I am going to check it out. Do they usually just stay one night? thanks for posting this.
What a great post and I have never heard of this 'couch surfing' before but think it's a great idea. Thanks for sharing, and for the link.
This really is a fab idea, especially in these tough times. Your surfers all looked delightful folk.
What a great idea! Thanks for posting the links.
I may have to check out Couch Surfers myself!
Very interesting way to travel. Will check out the site.
This is unique! Innovative way to get linked with like minded people.
What a great idea. I am going to check out their site.
I had fresh Salmon last night—it was YUM! MB
This is really a wonderful idea Gaelyn and you are bound to meet the most interesting people this way.
I'd never heard of it but it sounds like a great idea and I'm pleased you've had two good experiences through it.
Janice
We have had international young people staying here and even earning themselves enough money for their next leg of adventure. Without belonging to any organisation we somehow end up with people needing a bed.
How nice of you to share your space with other travelers, Gaelyn.
I visited the link you posted and its sounds like and interesting idea.
Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Your photos are wonderful, and what a fantastic idea that is! Thank you for the information and the link!
I certainly learned something new from your blog today. It shall definitely pop in at that site and check the ins and outs of couch surfing!
Couchsurfing is a great idea… Glad to hear you have met some wonderful people through it.
Couchsurfing is really a wonderful way to travel and to meet new people! I didn't know anything about it until now, I'm going to visit their site! Have a great day! Ciao!
Gaelyn: That is one I had never heard about, seem like nice people.
Where do you stay while they are at your place?
This is a brilliant idea and for anybody (I guess old folks are welcome too) this has got to make any trip a real vacation.
Wow! Never heard about that before, but what a cool way to meet new people!!
Fascinating concept, seems like a win-win situation for people who want to participate. I don't think my other half would go for it.
Couchsurfers are so much fun and bring so much to our lives. I have had several here with me and I do not think I have do so much laughing in such a long time. Thanks for sharing this Gaylen
How interesting! Though I'm not ready to join the organization at this point in my life, let me know if you ever need a couch in Albuquerque. I'd probably even clean off the guest bed for you!
Gaelyn,
you are one cool ranger chick!
Always doing such great things!
love this!
