Yesterday I cleaned my little RV, a chore I gladly will put off forever. But I was expecting company. When I booked my trip to South Africa I joined a website called CouchSurfers. This is a group of world travelers who host other travelers and stay at people’s houses. I’ve had a few interested folks but they all went to South Rim of Grand Canyon instead of the North Rim (the poor fools). Anyway, a young man from the UK made a couch request and I offered my camper for the night. He called last night lost so I told him to stay at the Lodge and I’d come lead him into my place. It was dark and would have been hard to find my turn off. I waited in the Lodge at the appointed place for an hour. Not a total waste as I saw a fellow Ranger’s evening program. Then once back home I sent him an email, didn’t have a phone number. And sure enough, he was on the South Rim and hadn’t read my note reminding him I’m on the North Rim. Oh well. But I cleaned my house for nothing.
I also took this video of the hummingbirds right outside my window. So thought I’d share it. Sorry about the background noise, I had NPR on. Yet you can also hear the hummers if you listen closely. Still practicing video. I hear practice makes better.
Murphy's Law. You know darn well that had you not cleaned, he would have shown up for sure. Enjoy your clean house! 🙂
I like your hummer video, even if it is practice. I'm still learning that skill, too, and yours is far better than mine.
What a neat idea Gaelyn. A pity he did not turn up but I can tell you I would not let a stranger like that into my house. I would have 30 years ago but not any more.
Really liked your Hummer video – they have begun to dive bomb me in the garden. Can't put the feeders out b3cause of the bears, but I plant red flowers to draw the Hummers. Enjoy your clean RV!
so your cleaning was not all in vain, a good thing. the little hummers so very cute ^..^
interesting concept the couch people. now i know you have got to have a can of mace handy in your place, right? and perhaps something else?
hope so.
hugs always
I think your video is great actually. You are a trusting soul inviting a stranger in for the night. I don't think I could do it, maybe if it was a female.
Sorry, you cleaned for nothing (well not for nothing, because now it's clean LOL), I keep seeing these feeders for humming birds, and I think I'll like to buy one. One of my concerns is it will also attract bees?
I think you did a good job with the hummers video.
Not a total waste to clean the house. Now you can enjoy it. Too bad the tourist went to the wrong place. The North Rim is much more peaceful, and just as beautiful.
I am sorry that you cleaned for nothing, but how nice of you to offer up your couch..Interesting idea. I love the hummer video, I never get more than one at a time at any of my feeders….
I miss being involved in CouchSurfing. I used it religiously for three years. It's just hard offering to host when my job is so transient, and I never really need a place to stay while on the road, as I'm almost always on assignment or visiting friends in other countries. Glad you're getting involved!
Silly man, no idea what a treasure he missed. Still now your home is spotlessly clean for you.
The joy of cleaning lies in the clean RV! Even without a guest. I thought when I saw your blog title you were going to be talking about the Hummer vehicles (those big gas guzzlers). What a lovely surprise to see the hummingbirds.
Gaelyn: Neat video of the hummers, you did a nice job for just learning on the shot. I took some photos recently that I need to show.
"Poor fools," indeed! Like your video!
Its been years but the North Rim is much more satisfying than the South Rim. Much harder to get to, from the east.
Hi again, Gaelyn, boy I'm having fun surfing your blog. I love your video of the Humming birds. I'm fascinated by their long straight beaks. They remind me of our sunbirds, although these have curved beaks. Their actions (fast and jittery) are the same though. Urgh, I don't enjoy housework either. I'll probably blog about this once-a-year chore next month when my houselady, Emily goes on her annual leave. I visited a blog earlier today with a tag in the sidebar which said: "A clean house means a broken computer" I've add myself as a follower to your blog. Jo
