Celebrate Earth Day, every day!

View from Toroweap

I see myself as part of the planet, dwelling here for the briefest of moments compared to the age of Mother Earth.  She takes care of my basic needs and in return I try to respect that, and walk softly.  But I don’t do enough.

The April 22 Earth Day, founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, was first organized in 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet and also encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.  I’m wondering how much has changed?

The list is endless what we can do and suggestions are everywhere.  We know what we need to do.  May seem overwhelming, but if everybody does their part, no matter how big or small, the word and action spreads.  Start in your own backyard until it has spread to your community, and then beyond.  Think to the future and the legacy left behind.

Grand Canyon

Returning to the Grand Canyon I am reminded of Earth’s his/herstory.  The work of time on rock exposes 1.8 billion years of a changing Earth.  Each layer in the canyon tells the story of a different climate and landscape including oceans, swamps, beaches and sand dunes.

Recycle center

Is it so hard to believe that change will continue on Earth?  It’s a cyclic planet.  And yes we all need to reduce our “carbon footprint” and get more Green while we learn to adapt with our changing Earth.  Get in touch with nature and it will touch you.

5th-wheel RV

So here I am on Earth Day, on the road being fuel consumptive as I tow my RV home to my summer abode at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  Which, by the way, doesn’t open to the public until May 15th.  Check the National Park Service website for the summer 2013 park newspapers for more information.  And then come back here to get the inside scoop from Ranger Gaelyn.

Now get out there and celebrate the Earth, today and every day!
