This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes images chosen by 11 readers from my photo files featuring rocks and wildlife from the USA and South Africa.
Jodee and Bill chose #1138. Because getting to Point Sublime means driving two hours for 18 miles on a rough road it only makes sense to camp and enjoy the sunset from this remote point into Grand Canyon.
Mary Lou chose #2854. The antics of ground squirrels entertain around the world. This one seemed to be chasing something in Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa. On safari all wildlife sightings are awesome.
Pam and John chose #9176. This Dassie Nature Trail in Augrabies Falls National Park, South Africa would be right up there alley. Joan and I got soaked when the sky opened up during this hike.
Donna chose #297. This panoramic view can be experienced from East Rim viewpoint along the Arizona Trail in the Kaibab National Forest. There’s plenty of nearby dispersed free camping with no more than ten miles of typically good gravel forest roads. The view east (obviously) reaches over the Marble Platform where the Colorado River slices through rock and beyond to Navajo Mountain seen faintly in the distance.
Diane and Nigel chose #5557. Another view from Walhalla overlook on the North Rim they might remember from their recent Grand Canyon visit. Not sure either of them got as close to the edge as this Raven.
Bibi chose #1142. A rather hokey bunch of old buildings at the Movie Set Museum in Kanab, Utah. This shot taken through a gunport of a building used in the Ratpack’s Sergeants released in 1962.
Sherry and David chose #8000. A young elephant seen at Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. It really wasn’t alone and had just been playing with several other youngsters. Adults were nearby.
Patti chose #15. Yet another oldie with 3-week old me, Mom and my brother from 1954 in Hinsdale, Illinois.
Shane chose #5471. A glorious sunrise over the Indian Ocean located just below camp in Scottburgh, South Africa. Definitely worth getting up for.
Sallie forgot her number so gets #64 for the number of words in her comment. Back in the 1980s I was a animal keeper at the California Living Museum (CALM) in Bakersfield. Of the two cougars, Whiskers the male wasn’t very friendly and I never turned my back on him. Sierra the female was all lovey. Someone tried to raise these two from cubs which wasn’t successful and they were too heavily imprinted on humans to be rehabilitated and released back to the wild. My heart broke for them both as I helped spread the message through education to keep wildlife wild.
Yogi let random dot org choose #9663. Rhinos in the wilds of Pilanesburg Game Reserve, South Africa.
My choice taken last Friday when the sky beconed with powerful crepuscular rays at sunset. I don’t really walk the tracks but they sure put this view into perspective. I’d been thinking of this down the tracks view since I moved here last week. Maybe I should plan ahead on more of my photos as I think this is one of the best shots I’ve ever taken.
Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below. A big thanks to everyone for playing along with Foto Friday Fun and allowing me to share these photographs and memories.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Great photos once again and no we did not get that close to the edge, certainly not Nigel! That last shot is amazing, it would make a great framed picture. 5558 for next week please. If I am silent over the weekend it is because we have a lot on, will be back to normal Monday I hope. Enjoy your weekend Diane and Nigel
Thanks Diane. I’m pretty proud of that sunset shot. Have a marvelous weekend. Bill says Hi.
The sky shots are spectacular, though I love ‘my’ hokey building. Next week I’ll choose #3910, part of my childhood address.
Thanks. Have you down for #3910.
Bill and Jodee hit the jackpot photo this week!! Love, love that photo:) Another awesome group of photos. Yes, I would have enjoyed that hike in South Africa with all those boulders. Glad you included that photo you took of the sunset with the tracks. That is a gorgeous photo, Gaelyn:)
#6543
Thanks Pam. Have you down for #6543.
Wow you’ve got some great ones again today. Love my elephant! Any elephant, especially in the wild. And rhinos in the wild too. How wonderful. Great cougar picture but so sad. Why in the world do people do such stupid thoughtless things as thinking they can raise a mountain lion? I’d say your picture of Point Sublime feels just that way – sublime. So is the sunrise over the Indian Ocean. Your last picture of the tracks heading to the mountains is really fantastic. What a sky. I never seem to be able to pick just one or even two….. I’ll try #4647 next week please.
Thanks Sherry. Love, and miss, seeing the wildlife. Have you down for #4647.
Enjoyed all of the great photos this week. My favorite is your choice this week. It is spectacular.
Please put me down for 1142 for next week.
Thanks Mary Lou. I really scored on that sunset shot. Have you down for #1142.
“…. I think this is one of the best shots I’ve ever taken.” I agree!
Thanks Ed.
I agree with Pam that our pic is fabulous – love all those subtle layers. A most wonderful shot of the Raven, a favorite of mine. Your final pic is truly amazing, so many messages all in one frame. #5111 for next week please.
Thanks Jodee. It really is a “Sublime” view. My new favorite photo is that sunset over the tracks. Have you down for #5111.
Oh my gosh Gaelyn — that last picture is stunning. i wouldn’t want you to be planning all your pictures, but once in a while when you realize what time of day the perfect moment is likely to happen — like in this example — I am glad you were there! (And I want to hop a train and travel straight into that sky!) “My” picture (and thanks for giving me a #) is a lovely but poignant portrait. Can’t imagine what people are thinking when they try to tame wildlife. I’m glad you were there to help this pair and spread the message. As always I enjoyed the whole journey today.
I took a lesson from Yogi today and went to that random dot place; it gave me 128 for next week.
Thanks Sallie. I’m rather proud of that shot. No worry about too much pre-plannng. I’m kind of spontaneous about most of my photos. I was always in conflict as an animal keeper, honored to be there but broken hearted they were there. Have you down for #128.
As soon as I caught a glimpse of the black/white photo, I knew it would be my pick for the week. Love it. I hope you’re enjoying this trip down memory lane!
Next week, let’s go with #20
The train tracks and the sunset is a stunning photo, Gaelyn, and I think I might have to agree about it being one of your best. You really caught the moment. I pinned it to my Train board.
Thanks Patti. You’re really digging my oldies. Fun to see those come up. Those train tracks will probably be seen in some future shots. Glad you like it. Have you down for #20.
Well, I am 61 years old, and I have decided that I need to go camping at Point Sublime so I can get up early and view the sunrise for myself. I know that I won’t take a photo as good as yours, but I am going to take a few photos.
So I have a new item on my bucket list. Afterwards I would like to buy you a beer wherever beers are bought on the North Rim. Meanwhile. my number is 7222 according to random dot org.
You really do need to camp at Point Sublime, and I should be there too. Then I’ll bring beer and we’ll toast to…
Have you down for #7222.
Hi Gaelyn, I loved the sunray/track shot the first time I saw it; I love it even more this time round. It’s my favorite. Have a great week. Jo
Thanks Jo. I need to work on some more really good shots like that.
OK, the South African sunrise was amazing and then I got to the train track shot. Wow.
Sad about the mountain lions. It must have been something to have spent time with them, though.
#4744 this week, please.
Thanks Shane. I got really lucky on those shots. Nice when that happens. Working with wildlife is double edged, an honor to be with them but a heart break they’re not out in the wild. Have you down for #4744.
My hands-down favorite this week is your “down the tracks” picture. So striking it looks surreal.
Next week, I choose #307
Being on the tracks under those amazing sun rays was rather surreal. Have you down for #307.
