Diane chose #0807. During the last visit to Addo Elephant National Park Joan and I spent a lot of time watching the elephants at various waterholes. Sometimes a huge herd and others a smaller family, all fabulous to see their interactions and playfulness. And there’s no concern about all the buffalo hanging around.
Sherry has been very busy lately and forgot a number this week so I chose #433 for the number of characters in her comment. Really appropriate because she’s an avid reader and Loves libraries. This might be one of the smallest around in the community room at the North Rim Grand Canyon. As the local librarian this pile of donated books and magazines greeted me upon arrival in spring 2012.
Sallie chose #6309, the last four digits of a decade old phone number. This butte known as Wotan’s Throne is more than decades old and it never gets old to see the many moods surrounding it. From a partial inversion during monsoon 2014 the fog rolled up from the canyon providing a backdrop to accentuate the formation.
Shane chose #289 and he recently returned from a road trip to many national parks including the North Rim where we met. In his choice the last light of a January day in 2012 highlights the Weaver Mountains and the Yarnell Hill Road that leads to my winter home.
Yogi chose #717 featuring the sandstone walls along the wash on the Wire Pass Trail in Grand Staircase-Escalante during a September 2011 hike. Coincidence that I was back hiking near here two days ago?
Which is where this shot of the West Clark Bench was taken in upper Buckskin Canyon also in Grand Staircase-Escalante. I’m trying to catch up on all the places I’ve been to lately including this hike.

Do you have a favorite from this week?
Love the tiny library !
All great photos but I do love mine best. African wild life is part of growing up for me and I do miss it so much.. thanks for this one. 0907 for next week please. have a good weekend. Diane
I miss SA. Maybe this winter I’ll get back there. Have you down for #0907.
Oh, I love Wotan’s Throne. It must be spectacular — the monsoons. And the inversion in the photo? What a backdrop, and what a grand place.
Monsoon has become my favorite season at the canyon. The inversions are Awesome!
I love all the photos. So are you the librarian??
My number for next week is 171
Thanks Yogi. Yes, I am the librarian. Have you down for #171.
Wish I could climb Wotan’s Throne in person, but I enjoyed the virtual hike to ‘my’ rock formation! Thanks for giving it to me! Enjoyed all the pictures very much. We used to find pretty good ‘take-one/leave-one libraries in almost every RV Park where we stayed. Not so much any more. People either aren’t reading as much at all or they are using e-readers, I’m afraid. (Although I do that too, I must admit.)
Wish I could climb Wotan’s also but there really isn’t a known trail. Yet there are Native ruins on top so somebody did it long ago. I agree that less people are reading books but these are primarily resource books for canyon employees. No number this week?
Thanks for posting that photo! I never think to take pictures of people and was kicking myself when I got home for not having Jim take one with my camera. I’ve added it to my blog entry for that day. I probably said this already, but meeting you was one of the highlights of the trip.
I love books, but I have to admit I’ve packed most of my personal library away into boxes. It’s all kindle for me these days. Well, except for my Sibley’s Guide to Birds, of course.
#6693 for me this week, please.
You make me blush. I too usually forget to take people pictures.
I do most of my reading online also but sure is nice to have reference books at work. And of course field guides.
Have you down for #6693.
I am having SUCH a hard time with internet here in Shenandoah National Park. I can’t keep up with the comments on blogs I like to read and I can’t post my own half the time so I’m really happy that you picked such a perfect picture for me. I love that you are the librarian. I always thought I’d like to retire and be one but that didn’t happen. Love the elephant picture too. Just finished Jodi Picolt’s latest book which is a bit bizarre in the end but has a lot of information on elephants. I am really worried about them. They are just amazing creatures who deserve a stress and fear free life from poachers. 3366 for next week please.
I have a hard time with internet on the North Rim also. Most of the time I’m operating on 1X, whatever that is it’s slower than dialup. Not to mention spending all my time off playing so no time to read my favorite blogs either. I thought you’d like the library. I used to read books all the time but don’t seem to find time anymore.
Of course you know I worry about the elephants. What is it with our species that we have disregard of all life on the planet.
Have you down for #3366.
