Hobbits in Hogsback South Africa
Hobbits are Never Daunted
They will wander in the land of the misty mountains
Where monkeys fly
And fruit for the taking grows in the forest
As butterflies flutter by
Waterfalls flowing over steps of stone
Giant redwoods tower overhead
Over-sized ferns hide the little people from sight
A chapel awaits your prayers
Darest you enter Hobnots Hollow
Below where the mighty dragon’s lair
Or walk the labyrinth
At the edge of the world.
I’ve heard said that JR Tolkien created Middle Earth during his many visits to Hogsback and could certainly believe it to be true after wandering my own path here.
Discover the enchantment of Hogsback by visiting the Arboretum, St Patricks on the Hill chapel, the Labyrinth and many art galleries.
Hello Dear,
What a wonderful place and post. I wish I were there with you.
Gorgeous sunny day today and another coming tomorrow in the
Upper 50 s. John out doing yard work while I hunkered down to the spring cleaning down stairs. Will finish tomorrow. Felt good with all the doors open and fresh air coming in. Sorting lots of cool beads I swaped, bought cheap at a sale and a box someone gave me. Too much fun. Working on something very different for me a netted bracelet done over a oval memory wire. I’ll send a photo when I finish.
All our best for a terrific rest of the trip. Dying to hear all the stories. Hugs,
Shirley and John
Glad you are enjoying beautiful weather. How fun to be working on a new creative idea.
Wonderful country and you seem to be having an absolutely grand time Gaelyn.
Is that Table Mountain in the first shot?
I truly admire your intrepid spirit travelling alone.
I haven’t gotten as far as Table Mt, yet. That’s the Hogsbacks northwest of Port Elizabeth.
As no one seems to want to travel with me I won’t let that keep me home.
Hugs to you my friend.
Hogsback is truly magical and visiting there you can see why. We haven’t been in many years but I think its time for a return visit. Need to show Drama Princess some fairies.
She will giggle with delight at the little people.
Wonderful photos and the ‘flying’ monkey is amazing. So glad you are having a good time. Have a good week Diane
I was just a little freaked out when the first monkey flew over but camera ready for the next several.
Wow!!! Those photographs are just gorgeous. What a magical place. The beauty is everywhere. Thank you so much for showing me a place I now long to see in person. I sure wish I could be there with you and be oooing and ahhhing in person. And a labyrinth to walk. How perfect!! This place is actually hard to belive it is real. Hobbits indeed!
Thanks Sherry. You really must visit South Africa. So many amazing places to see. I want to spend more time at all of them during future visits. The labyrinth was so rejuvenating. And yes, Hobbits are real.
Wow, I believe it now also. Who knew such a place existed?
You really have to see it to believe it.
Great photos of an interesting place. Glad you are enjoying the trip.
Thanks Colleen. Just gets better every day.
Hello there — GREAT PICTS – – You will be back in almost exactly a month – – Are you able to even think that far ahead – – Time warps itself when on a fantasy voyage like yours – – Keep on keeping on, and I’ll see you soon – – Love – Berta
I’m not sure I ever want to come back. This place is So amazing. I could consider retiring here. Especially if Congress keeps fucking with NPS. Who knows if I’ll even have a job this summer. Return the 20th of March. Please check your calendar to pick me up in Prescott. Miss you Love.
I do envy you!! My daughter is getting married somewhere in the area later this month… unfortunately the Irish have to visit by teleconference!!
Oh well, life…
One quick one for you to consider… that may well be a yellow wood… 😉
The Arboretum has many plants and trees from around the world. It’s definitely California Redwoods of which I was surprised.
Too bad you can’t join the wedding.
Breathtaking!!! 8*)
I recently discovered that a friend has a son in collage there!! Now I get to see these amazing places through two sets of eyes!! I am so lucky! 8*)
Thank you!! 8*)
Sounds like you have a very good excuse to visit South Africa.

I definitely want to return and spend more time in Hogsback.
